What to Wear in Adana: Breathable Cotton, Canyon Trail Shoes and Carnival Colour

Packing breathable cottons for the Çukurova sun, grippy trainers for Kapıkaya Canyon and an orange flower crown in April.

Adana has a warm, outgoing and relaxed Mediterranean urban culture. Along the boulevard cafés of Ziyapaşa, inside Merkez Park and around the lakeside promenades, locals dress in comfortable, stylish Mediterranean casual wear. Because the Çukurova Plain was historically Turkey's great cotton ("White Gold") capital, following the local preference for 100% breathable cotton and linen is the smartest rule for your suitcase. Before setting out, review our adana travel guide and things to do guide so you can coordinate local transport, walking distances and seasonal daylight hours across each neighbourhood.

Four Practical Packing Tips for Adana

  1. Loose Cotton and Linen Layers (Plus a Light Jacket for Winter/Spring Nights): from April through early November, daytime weather in Adana is T-shirt, polo-shirt, linen-trouser and sundress weather (24°C to 35°C). Even in December, January and February, you will only need a medium-weight jacket or sweater over a long-sleeved shirt by day, as frost is virtually unknown in the city centre.
  2. Cushioned Trainers or Trail Walking Shoes (For Kapıkaya Canyon, Varda & Anavarza): while central Adana's riverfront and bazaar streets are completely flat and paved, hiking the 7-kilometre riverside path through Kapıkaya Canyon, climbing to the viewing cliffs above the 1912 Varda Viaduct, or scrambling up the rocky medieval ramparts of Yılankale and Anavarza requires closed-toe trainers with good rubber grip rather than flat sandals.
  1. A Light Scarf for Historic Mosques (Sabancı Mosque & 1541 Ulu Cami): when stepping inside the Sabancı Central Mosque, Ramazanoğlu Ulu Cami or Yağ Camii, slip off your shoes at the carpeted threshold, cover shoulders and knees, and women should drape a light scarf over their hair (free loaner robes and headscarves are also provided at the entrance of Sabancı Mosque).
  2. Sunglasses, Sunscreen & An Orange-Blossom Crown in April: if you visit during April's Orange Blossom Carnival, pick up one of the handmade fresh-flower crowns (portakal çiçeği tacı) sold at stalls across Merkez Park and Ziyapaşa to join the parade. Check seasonal weather before flying.
