Walking Banff Town: Banff Avenue, Bow Falls, Surprise Corner and Tunnel Mountain Hike

Exploring Canada's highest town on foot: Banff Avenue, the turquoise Bow River trail, Bow Falls and Tunnel Mountain.

Sitting at 1,383 metres (4,537 feet) elevation, making it the highest municipality in Canada, Banff Town is unique because it sits inside a protected UNESCO National Park: strict federal boundaries prevent urban sprawl, there are zero high-rise buildings or fast-food drive-thrus, and wild elk routinely graze on the town park lawns at dawn. You can walk every corner of the town and its scenic river trails in half a day without touching a car.

1. The Perfect 2-Hour Banff Town & Bow River Walking Loop

  1. Banff Avenue & Bear Street: start with a warm espresso or a freshly fried cinnamon-sugar pastry at BeaverTails on Banff Avenue (where the 3,000-metre limestone pyramid of Cascade Mountain looms at the end of the street like a movie backdrop), then step one block west onto charming, pedestrian-friendly Bear Street for independent bookshops, art galleries and cafés.
  2. The Bow River Bridge, Cascade of Time Gardens & Cave and Basin: walk to the southern end of Banff Avenue and cross the stone-piered bridge over the milky-turquoise Bow River. Directly ahead sit the terraced 1935 Cascade of Time Gardens (free admission. Famous for 50,000 summer blooms and its landmark framing view looking back up Banff Avenue). (You can also walk 15 minutes west along the river to the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, step inside the lantern-lit underground limestone cavern and steaming emerald thermal pool that sparked the creation of Canada's national parks in 1885).
  3. The Forested River Walk to Bow Falls & Surprise Corner (30 Mins): follow the flat, cedar-scented boardwalk trail east along the river rapids to thunderous Bow Falls (where Marilyn Monroe filmed River of No Return in 1953) right below the castle towers of the 1888 Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, then cross the Spray River bridge and climb the wooden steps to Surprise Corner Viewpoint.

2. The Best 1-Hour Town Hike: Tunnel Mountain Summit (4.3 km Round-Trip)

Want a panoramic summit view without paying for a gondola ticket? Walk 10 minutes from downtown Banff to the trailhead of Tunnel Mountain (Sleeping Buffalo, 1,692m): a wide, gentle 2.1-kilometre switchback path climbs just 260 vertical metres in 45 minutes to a Pair of Parks Canada Red Chairs looking straight down on Banff Town, the Bow River valley and the golf course loops below Mount Rundle.
