Best Time to Visit Banff: When the Turquoise Lakes Thaw, Golden September Larches & Winter

Timing your trip so you don't arrive to frozen lakes: the June-to-October turquoise window and late-September golden larches.

More than almost any other destination on Earth, choosing the right month for Banff is critical: because Lake Louise (1,731m) and Moraine Lake (1,885m) sit at high alpine altitude in the Canadian Rockies, visitors who arrive in April or early May expecting neon-turquoise lakes are shocked to find them still frozen under a metre of white snow and ice. Here is the month-by-month reality so you time your trip right.

1. The Turquoise Lake & Hiking Season (Mid-June to Early October)

  • Early June (1 to 15 June, The Thaw & Opening of Moraine Lake Road): Moraine Lake Road opens to shuttles on 1 June. During the first week of June, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake finish thawing (often with dramatic floating ice floes breaking up on turquoise water), waterfalls like Johnston Canyon roar at peak snowmelt volume, and bears feed in the lower valleys.
  • Peak Summer (Late June, July and August, Brightest Turquoise Water): why are the lakes brightest in July and August? Because warm summer sun (21°C to 26°C) melts the upper glaciers fastest, washing maximum rock flour into Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Bow Lake and Peyto Lake. Every high-alpine hiking trail (Big Beehive, Sentinel Pass, Parker Ridge) is snow-free, and daylight lasts late in the evening.
  • Golden Larch Season (15 September to 10 October, The Photographers' Favorite): during the final two weeks of September and first week of October, millions of high-alpine deciduous conifers called Subalpine Larches turn a glowing, electric canary-gold above the turquoise lakes (especially in Larch Valley above Moraine Lake and Lake Agnes). Remember: Moraine Lake Road closes for winter snow right after Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday of October).

2. Winter Wonderland & Shoulder Season (November to May)

From December to March (-5°C to -15°C), Lake Louise becomes one of the world's most atmospheric outdoor ice-skating rinks (with the carved Ice Magic Festival castles in January/February), you walk on ice cleats past frozen blue waterfalls in Johnston Canyon, and ski at SkiBig3 (Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay). (Note: April, May and late October/November are quiet low-price transition months when lakes are frozen/half-frozen and trails are muddy/icy). Check what to pack for Banff.
