Getting to Banff from Calgary Airport (YYC): Express Shuttles, Rental Cars & Scenic Trains
Reaching Banff Town in 90 minutes from Calgary Airport (YYC) by direct shuttle coach, budget bus or rental car.
Unlike remote national parks that require hours of winding backroads, Banff National Park is one of the easiest alpine parks in the world to reach: Calgary International Airport (YYC), served by direct flights from London, Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Seoul and almost every major US and Canadian hub, sits just 145 kilometres (90 minutes on divided four-lane Highway 1) east of Banff Town.
1. Without a Car: Airport Shuttles & Budget Buses from Calgary (YYC) to Banff
If you plan to use Banff's excellent Roam Public Transit and Parks Canada Shuttles once you arrive, you do not even need to rent a car at Calgary Airport:
- Door-to-Door Airport Shuttles (Banff Airporter & Brewster Express, ~standard fare, standard fare One-Way): both depart directly from the Ground Transportation level of Calgary Airport (YYC) 10 to 14 times a day, stopping in Canmore (75 mins) and dropping you directly at the lobby door of your Banff Town or Lake Louise hotel.
- Budget Bus Options (FlixBus, Vivo Green & Seasonal 'On-It Regional Transit', standard fare to standard fare): from May to September on weekends/holidays, On-It Regional Transit runs a standard fare bus from downtown Calgary/Crowfoot LRT to Canmore and Banff, while FlixBus and Vivo Green offer daily budget departures from YYC and downtown Calgary.
2. Picking Up a Rental Car at Calgary Airport (YYC)
If you want to drive the Icefields Parkway, visit Emerald Lake in Yoho, and catch sunrise at Vermilion Lakes and Two Jack Lake, rent a car at Calgary Airport. The drive takes 1 hour 15 minutes across the rolling foothills to Canmore, and 5 minutes later you reach the Banff National Park East Gate (use the right-hand lanes to buy your daily Parks Canada Pass, or buy it online ahead of time and drive straight through the left-hand Through Traffic / Pass Holders lane). (Travelling from Vancouver? The famous glass-domed Rocky Mountaineer luxury daylight train runs 2 days from Vancouver straight to Lake Louise and Banff Station).
