Timber coastal boardwalk and granite sea cliffs along the oceanfront trail in Busan

What to Wear in Busan

Footwear for hillside stairs and cliffside boardwalks, plus wind-resistant layers for ocean breezes.

Packing for Busan requires thinking about two local features that set it apart from inland cities: steep hillside staircases and cliff trails, and a constant Korea Strait sea breeze. Even on a sunny 22°C afternoon in May or October, the wind blowing across the Oryukdo glass skywalk, Taejongdae cliffs or the Gwangalli beachfront drops the perceived temperature quickly after sunset.

Footwear for Gamcheon stairs and coastal trails

  • Cushioned walking trainers with good grip: exploring Gamcheon Culture Village and Huinnyeoul Culture Village means climbing and descending hundreds of narrow concrete steps, while the 108 stone stairs at Haedong Yonggungsa Temple and the timber suspension bridges of the Igidae Coastal Walk demand supportive, flat rubber soles.
  • Note on glass skywalks (Cheongsapo Daritdol and Oryukdo): at Busan's over-water glass observation decks, visitors slip protective fabric booties (provided free at the entrance) over their shoes to avoid scratching the glass floor; high stiletto heels are not permitted on the glass.
  • A windbreaker, denim jacket or cardigan from spring to autumn: pack a wind-resistant outer layer in your daypack whenever you head out to Haeundae or Gwangalli Beach for the evening light show.

Seasonal packing, temples and seafood markets

In July and August, bring breathable linen or cotton shirts, UV sunglasses, a sun hat with a chin strap (or tight fit for windy headlands), swimwear for Haeundae or Songjeong and a compact umbrella for summer showers. If you visit Jagalchi Fish Market, wear closed-toe trainers or water-resistant shoes rather than suede or delicate sandals, as the market aisles are hosed down continuously with seawater to keep the live tanks fresh. In winter (December to February), although Busan rarely drops below freezing by day, the maritime wind off the harbour makes a windproof down jacket and scarf essential. When visiting active Buddhist temples like Beomeosa and Haedong Yonggungsa, neat casual clothing covering shoulders and mid-thighs is appropriate. Review seasonal weather in Busan before you travel.
