Busan: What to Know Before You Go

Understanding Busan's east-west coastal geography, booking Haeundae Sky Capsules and using Naver Map.

Short answer: treat Busan as an east-west chain of bays separated by mountains (allow 45 to 60 minutes on the Metro between historic Nampo-dong in the west and Haeundae Beach in the east), book your Haeundae Blueline Park Sky Capsule online two to three weeks ahead, and use Naver Map or KakaoMap rather than Google Maps for walking and bus directions.

West Busan (Port & Villages) versus East Busan (Beaches & Bridges)

The biggest surprise for first-time visitors arriving from Seoul is how long Busan is from west to east. Because granite ridges push right down to the sea, the city is strung out along a forty-kilometre coastal ribbon. In the West and South-West (Line 1) sit KTX Busan Station, Jagalchi Fish Market, BIFF Square in Nampo-dong, Gamcheon Culture Village and Huinnyeoul Culture Village on Yeongdo Island. In the East (Line 2) lie Gwangalli Beach, Centum City, Haeundae Beach, Blueline Park and cliffside Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, with Seomyeon acting as the central inland junction where Lines 1 and 2 cross. Group all western sights into one day and all eastern beach sights into another so you are not spending two hours in transit mid-afternoon.

What to book ahead: Haeundae Sky Capsule and weekend KTX trains

Almost every temple, market and coastal boardwalk in Busan is walk-up and free, with one major exception: the elevated two-to-four-passenger Sky Capsule at Haeundae Blueline Park (especially the coastal leg departing from Mipo Station to Cheongsapo in the late afternoon before sunset). Online reservations open weeks in advance on the official Blueline Park website and sell out rapidly; if Sky Capsules are full, book the larger shoreline Haeundae Beach Train along the same coastal track. Similarly, book Friday-to-Sunday KTX high-speed train seats from Seoul early on the official Korail (Let's Korail) website.

As across South Korea, Google Maps does not support turn-by-turn walking or transit routing; download Naver Map or KakaoMap (both have English interfaces) before arriving. Always tap your T-money card both when boarding and when stepping off the rear door of Busan city buses and neighbourhood green maeul minibuses (such as the minibus up to Gamcheon) so your free 30-minute Metro-to-bus transfer discount applies.
