Colonia del Sacramento: UNESCO Barrio Histórico
Plan your visit to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay: understand how the 1680 UNESCO Barrio Histórico, the 19th-century Centro by the ferry port, and the Rambla de las Américas to Real de San Carlos connect.
Jutting into the calm, amber waters of the Río de la Plata fifty kilometres across the estuary from Buenos Aires and two and a half hours west of Montevideo, Colonia del Sacramento is one of the easiest colonial cities in South America to explore on foot and by bicycle.

How Colonia del Sacramento Is Organised (Three Connected Zones)
- The UNESCO Barrio Histórico (San Gabriel Peninsula): West of the reconstructed 1745 Portón de Campo (Citadel Gate) and Muralla lies the 16-hectare Barrio Histórico, founded by the Portuguese in 1680. Shaded by century-old plane trees (plátanos) and pink-blossomed drunken trees (palos borrachos), its cobbled lanes hold Calle de los Suspiros, Plaza Mayor 25 de Mayo, the 1857 Lighthouse, the 1808 Basílica, and eight colonial museums.
- El Centro, Avenida General Flores and the Ferry and Bus Port: Immediately east of the city wall, tree-lined Avenida General Flores forms the 19th-century commercial spine of town, linking the Barrio Histórico in ten minutes on foot to both the Terminal Fluvial (Ferry Port) and the adjacent Terminal de Ómnibus.
- Rambla de las Américas and Real de San Carlos (5 km North-West): Curving north from the Yacht Harbour (Puerto de Yates) along a string of sandy river beaches, the palm-lined coastal boulevard of Rambla Costanera de las Américas leads five kilometres to Real de San Carlos and its restored 1910 Mudéjar Plaza de Toros.

Why Staying Overnight Beats a Quick Day Trip
Although many visitors cross from Buenos Aires for six hours at midday, the charm of Colonia arrives after the last day-trip ferry departs, vintage street lanterns flicker on over the cobblestones, and golden sunset light washes over the river bastions.
