3 Days in Dakar: Île de Gorée, Corniche Cliffs, Ngor Island and Lac Rose

Three days linking Plateau and Île de Gorée with the Corniche cliffs, Ngor Island and Lac Rose.

This three-day route groups Dakar geographically so you spend your time walking coastal paths and island lanes rather sitting in cross-peninsula traffic. Remember to pack your physical passport on Day 1 for the Gorée ferry as noted in our practical briefing.

Day 1: Historic Plateau, Museum of Black Civilisations & UNESCO Île de Gorée

  • Morning: start in Plateau at the monumental circular Museum of Black Civilisations, then walk past the restored nineteenth-century Gare de Dakar to the port and board a mid-morning chaloupe across the harbour to Île de Gorée.
  • Midday on Gorée: visit the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) and the historical museum inside circular Fort d'Estrées, enjoy a harbourside lunch of grilled thiof or poulet yassa, and climb the basalt path to Le Castel for views back toward mainland Dakar.
  • Late afternoon: return on the ferry to Plateau, stroll through shaded Place de l'Indépendance and the IFAN Museum of African Arts on Place Soweto, and finish with dinner in Plateau.

Day 2: Ngor Island, Les Almadies, African Renaissance Monument & Mamelles Sunset

  • Morning: head out to the western tip of the peninsula and ride a wooden pirogue across the channel to car-free Île de Ngor. Wander the art-lined stone alleys and swim in the sheltered southern cove.
  • Lunchtime: cross back to the mainland for a classic midday plate of thiéboudienne and chilled bissap or baobab bouye juice in Ngor or Pointe des Almadies, the westernmost point of continental Africa.
  • Afternoon to sunset: follow the coast south to climb the steps of the African Renaissance Monument, watch the painted fishing pirogues land their afternoon catch at Soumbédioune, and head up to the 1894 Phare des Mamelles lighthouse terrace to watch the sun sink into the Atlantic.

Day 3: Lac Rose Salt Harvesters, Village des Arts & Plage du Virage

  • Morning: take a half-day excursion 35 km northeast to Lac Rose (Lake Retba) when the midday sunlight brings out the lagoon's mineral tones and salt harvesters work from wooden boats along the shore.
  • Afternoon: return toward Dakar via the contemporary studios and shaded gardens of the Village des Arts, then spend your final late afternoon watching surfers or walking the sand at Plage du Virage before an evening dibi grilled lamb dinner.
