Where to Stay in Dakar: Plateau, Les Almadies, Ngor and Corniche Ouest

Four distinct Dakar areas compared for walkable heritage, Atlantic surf and Corniche views.

Because the Cap-Vert peninsula forms a triangle jutting into the ocean, traffic between the southern tip (Plateau) and the northwestern point (Ngor and Les Almadies) can slow down during morning and evening rush hours. Picking the right neighbourhood depends on whether your priority is walking to museums and ferries or waking up to Atlantic surf.

1. Le Plateau (Best for first-timers, museums, Gorée ferry and walkability)

At the southern tip of the peninsula around Place de l'Indépendance, Avenue Léopold Sédar Senghor and the Corniche Est. Staying in Plateau puts you within a ten- to fifteen-minute walk of the TER airport train station, the Île de Gorée ferry terminal, the Museum of Black Civilisations and the IFAN Museum, along with French-Senegalese brasseries, bakeries and ocean-view business hotels.

2. Les Almadies, Ngor and Virage (Best for ocean breeze, surf and evening dining)

At the extreme western tip of the continent. This is Dakar's liveliest coastal dining and leisure district, home to boutique surf hotels overlooking the break at Virage, seaside resorts along the Pointe des Almadies, and small guesthouses in Ngor village or directly across the water on car-free Île de Ngor. You are ten minutes by taxi from the Mamelles Lighthouse and the African Renaissance Monument.

3. Corniche Ouest, Fann Résidence, Mermoz and Point E (Best central balance)

Positioned halfway between Plateau and Almadies along the volcanic western cliffs. Leafy diplomatic streets, art galleries, artisanal patisseries, the Cheikh Anta Diop University cultural precinct and cliffside resort hotels with swimming pools overlooking Madeleine Islands. From Mermoz or Fann, you are roughly fifteen minutes by taxi from either tip of the peninsula outside peak rush hour.

4. Île de Gorée (Best for a peaceful overnight after the day-trippers leave)

While most visitors see Gorée on a half-day ferry trip, spending one night in a restored courtyard guesthouse on the island lets you experience the sandy lanes, the Castel sunset and early-morning harbour stillness after the late afternoon chaloupe returns to Dakar.
