What to Wear in Dakar

Dressing well in West Africa's fashion capital while staying comfortable in the Atlantic breeze.

Dakar is one of the most style-conscious capitals in Africa. Walking down Avenue Léopold Sédar Senghor in Plateau or having dinner in Mermoz and Almadies, you will notice locals dressed with effortless elegance in starched damask boubous, custom-tailored wax-print outfits and smart casual linen. While beachside neighbourhoods like Ngor and Virage are relaxed, dressing neatly earns immediate warmth across the city.

Packing for the surprise cool breeze (November to May)

First-time visitors expecting tropical West African heat in January or February are often caught off guard by how fresh the Atlantic wind feels after sunset. Between December and April, evening breezes blowing off the Canary Current across the Corniche Ouest and the upper deck of the Gorée ferry drop temperatures below 19°C. Pack breathable linen or cotton shirts and trousers for sunny middays, paired with a light denim jacket, cardigan, pashmina scarf or cotton jumper for coastal evenings.

Modesty, footwear and having clothes custom-made

  • Smart-casual coverage in town: keep swimwear and sleeveless beach tops strictly on the sand at Ngor Island, Virage or hotel pools; when walking through Plateau, markets or residential streets, knee-length skirts, dresses or lightweight trousers and covered shoulders are comfortable and respectful. If visiting the exterior courtyard of the Grand Mosque or religious shrines, bring a headscarf and long trousers or a long skirt.
  • Footwear for sand and basalt steps: supportive leather sandals or breathable canvas trainers handle the sandy lanes of Île de Gorée, the steep volcanic steps up to the African Renaissance Monument and uneven city kerbs.
  • Sun protection and European plugs: bring a sunhat, sunglasses and a standard two-round-pin European Type C / Type E plug adapter.
  • Leave suitcase space for a Dakar tailor: neighbourhood tailors in Medina, Soumbédioune and Point E can measure you on Day 1 and stitch a bespoke shirt, jacket or dress from colourful West African cotton wax fabric before your flight home. Review seasonal weather before packing.
