Belo Horizonte

Brazil, South America

Framed by the iron-ore ridge of the Serra do Curral, Belo Horizonte pairs Oscar Niemeyer's 1943 UNESCO-listed Pampulha Modern Ensemble and the Praça da Liberdade museums with Mercado Central cheese stalls, Inhotim's botanical art gardens, and colonial Ouro Preto.

Quick decisions

  • How many days? Spend 3 to 4 days to cover Praça da Liberdade, Mercado Central, the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, and full-day excursions to both Instituto Inhotim and UNESCO-listed Ouro Preto.
  • Where should I stay? Choose Savassi for pedestrianised café plazas and evening botecos, or stay in neighbouring Lourdes for leafy streets, upscale Minas Gerais restaurants, and easy walks to Praça da Liberdade.
  • Do I need a car? You do not need a car inside Belo Horizonte; Uber and the MOVE BRT cover urban sights easily, while official shuttles and hourly coaches run directly to Inhotim and Ouro Preto.
  • Best for: Twentieth-century modernist architecture, world-class contemporary art in tropical gardens, artisanal raw-milk cheeses, bohemian bar culture, and eighteenth-century Baroque gold towns.
  • Before you go: Book timed entry tickets online for Instituto Inhotim and popular Circuito Liberdade exhibitions, and bring comfortable walking shoes for the steep cobblestone hills of Ouro Preto and Inhotim's garden trails.
  • Getting around: Walk between Lourdes, Savassi, and Praça da Liberdade during the day, use Uber or 99 for trips to Pampulha and Praça do Papa, and take the Conexão Aeroporto coach from Confins Airport (CNF).
  • Continue your trip: Pair Belo Horizonte with the modernist monuments of Brasília, the coastal islands of Florianópolis, or the colonial bay of Salvador.

Overview

Cradled at 852 metres above sea level against the jagged iron-ore wall of the Serra do Curral, Belo Horizonte was inaugurated on 12 December 1897 as Brazil's first planned republican state capital. Engineer Aarão Reis laid out a geometric grid of tree-shaded avenues inside the circular ring of Avenida do Contorno, creating a green highland metropolis that evolved into the cradle of Brazilian modernist architecture in the 1940s. Around the shore of Lagoa da Pampulha, a young Oscar Niemeyer, landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx, and painter Cândido Portinari created the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2019, the capital of Minas Gerais is equally beloved for its 1929 Mercado Central, its twelve thousand neighbourhood botecos, and its role as the gateway to Instituto Inhotim and Baroque Ouro Preto.

Getting there

Belo Horizonte Confins International Airport (CNF) lies 40 kilometres north of the centre, linked to Lourdes and the central bus station by executive Conexão Aeroporto coaches, while Brazil's last daily long-distance passenger train connects Praça da Estação with Vitória.

Where to stay

Base yourself in Savassi for walkable squares and lively evening bars, in adjacent Lourdes for boutique hotels and fine dining near Praça da Liberdade, or near Lagoa da Pampulha for quiet lakeside stays close to Mineirão Stadium.

Things to do

Cycle around the UNESCO-listed Pampulha Modern Ensemble, tour the museums of Praça da Liberdade, watch sunset from Praça do Papa, and dedicate full days to Instituto Inhotim and Ouro Preto.

Food and drink

Sample aged raw-milk Queijo da Canastra and fígado com jiló at Mercado Central, sit down to feijão tropeiro and frango com quiabo, and join the evening craft-beer crowd on the upper floors of Mercado Novo.

Culture

From the 1970s Clube da Esquina musical movement born in bohemian Santa Tereza to the citywide Comida di Buteco culinary competition every April and May, Belo Horizonte celebrates hospitality at street level.
