Gaborone: What to Know Before You Go

Understanding Gaborone's polycentric mall layout, Pula payments, wildlife bookings and Setswana greetings.

Short answer: treat Gaborone as a polycentric, drive-between-hubs capital rather than a single compact walking town, book guided wildlife activities at Mokolodi Nature Reserve ahead of arrival, and start every morning hike on Kgale Hill early to beat the Kalahari heat.

How the city is laid out: CBD, malls and residential extensions

Because Gaborone was master-planned on open bushveld in the 1960s and expanded rapidly as diamond revenues grew, it does not have a single centuries-old high street. Instead, daily life revolves around several distinct nodes. The oldest civic axis links the Parliament buildings and the pedestrianised Main Mall with the National Museum and the leafy diplomatic neighbourhood known as the Village. A short drive north-west rises the modern Central Business District (CBD), where glass ministries, high-rise hotels and the bronze Three Dikgosi Monument cluster around Masa Centre. Further out, locals socialise at neighbourhood shopping plazas such as Riverwalk, Game City (at the foot of Kgale Hill) and Airport Junction. Plan your days by grouping sights in the same corridor rather than crisscrossing town at rush hour.

What to book ahead and when to visit

City sights such as the Three Dikgosi Monument, the Main Mall craft stalls and the trails up Kgale Hill require no advance reservation. However, guided white rhino tracking, giraffe encounters and bush drives at Mokolodi Nature Reserve south of the city operate with small group caps; contact the reserve ahead to secure a morning or late-afternoon slot. Also check current gallery openings at the National Museum and Art Gallery and Thapong Visual Arts Centre before setting out, as exhibition halls occasionally rotate or close for renovations.

Botswana Pula, cards and Setswana etiquette

Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, supermarkets, filling stations and sit-down restaurants across Gaborone. Even so, keep small denominations of Botswana Pula (BWP) in cash for Main Mall craft vendors, street-side magwinya (fat cake) stalls, reserve entry gates and white-and-blue shared minibuses (combis). Batswana place warm value on polite greetings: say Dumela rra (hello sir) or Dumela mma (hello madam) before jumping into a question, and ask permission before photographing people or official government buildings. Compare bases in where to stay in Gaborone.
