Where to Stay in Gaborone: Best Areas Compared

Choosing between modern CBD towers, leafy guesthouses near the Village and bush chalets at Mokolodi.

Because Gaborone is organised around low-density residential extensions and modern commercial nodes rather than a single tight centre, choosing where to sleep depends on whether you want walkable access to modern restaurants and corporate offices, a quiet garden guesthouse near the museums, or acacia bushveld on the edge of town.

Central Business District (CBD) and Masa Centre (best for modern convenience)

Built around the Three Dikgosi Monument and the open-air piazza of Masa Centre, the CBD is the most polished urban base in the capital. High-rise business and boutique hotels sit a two-minute walk from espresso cafes, steakhouse terraces, banks and rooftop sundowner bars, and you are roughly fifteen minutes' drive from both Sir Seretse Khama Airport to the north and the Main Mall to the south-east. If you are in Gaborone without a hire car for a short stay, the CBD gives you the easiest foot access to dinner and coffee.

The Village, Extension 9 and Riverwalk (leafy, diplomatic and cultural)

Stretching east from the Government Enclave toward the Notwane River bridge and the Tlokweng road, the older tree-lined avenues of Extension 9, Extension 11 and The Village hold embassies, jacaranda-shaded villas and intimate owner-run guesthouses with swimming pools. Staying here puts you within a quick drive of the National Museum, Thapong Visual Arts Centre, the National Botanical Garden and the restaurants and bookshops of Riverwalk Mall, making it a favourite with longer-stay visitors and researchers.

Gaborone Sun / Boikhutso and Gaborone Game Reserve edge (central resort gardens)

Just north-east of the Main Mall along Chuma Drive and Nyerere Drive, established garden hotels and conference resorts sit on wide green grounds minutes from the entrance to Gaborone Game Reserve and the National Stadium, blending central access with resort pools and tennis courts.

Kgale View, Mokolodi and Phakalane (bush lodges and golf estates)

If you want to wake up to hornbills and impala rather than city traffic, look to the southern or northern fringes. Around Kgale View and 15 kilometres south inside Mokolodi Nature Reserve, rustic thatched chalets and secluded bush lodges sit directly beneath the granite slopes of Kgale Hill and among rhino-country thornveld. Alternatively, fifteen kilometres north of the CBD along the A1 highway toward Oodi, the suburb of Phakalane offers an 18-hole championship golf estate and quiet hotel suites close to the airport.
