Granite boulders and acacia scrub along the hiking trail up Kgale Hill in Gaborone
Gaborone · Botswana

What to Wear in Gaborone

Grippy footwear for granite hills, neutral layers for game reserves and warm fleeces for crisp winter nights.

Packing for Gaborone means preparing for intense high-veld sunshine, wide day-to-night temperature swings on the edge of the Kalahari, and a mix of polished modern shopping plazas and dusty bush trails. Even in the middle of the southern winter when afternoons feel warm in a T-shirt, early morning game drives and outdoor restaurant terraces require real insulation.

Footwear and clothing for Kgale Hill and game reserves

  • Trail runners or grippy walking trainers: essential if you plan to climb Kgale Hill or join a guided white rhino tracking walk at Mokolodi Nature Reserve. The upper slopes of Kgale involve stepping across angled pink granite boulders and loose gravel where smooth fashion soles slip easily, while bushveld paths harbour sharp moselesele and acacia thorns.
  • Muted khaki, olive, stone or taupe layers for wildlife walks: when tracking rhino on foot at Mokolodi or sitting in bird hides at Gaborone Game Reserve, wear neutral earth tones rather than bright white (which stands out in dry bush) or dark blue and black. Long lightweight cotton or linen trousers also protect shins from scratchy scrub.
  • A warm fleece or packable down jacket from May to August: winter nights and sunrise starts drop to 5°C to 8°C; layer a thermal top and fleece over a breathable shirt you can peel off by mid-morning.
  • High-factor sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat year-round: at 1,000 metres under cloudless skies, UV levels are fierce even in winter, and a light rain shell is useful for sudden afternoon downpours between November and March.

City style, government precincts and village visits

In the Central Business District, Riverwalk restaurants and hotel lounges, smart-casual clothing (collared shirts, chinos, neat jeans, midi dresses or linen separates) fits right in. Botswana is socially polite and understated: when visiting traditional craft cooperatives such as Oodi Weavers, walking through the Government Enclave or attending a community event, modest knee-length skirts or trousers are appreciated over very short beachwear. Check seasonal weather before you pack.
