4 to 5 Days in Honolulu & O'ahu: Waikiki, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Windward Coast & North Shore
A smart 4-to-5-day O'ahu plan: car-free Waikiki, Diamond Head & Pearl Harbor on Days 1 & 2, and Windward + North Shore road trips on Days 3 & 4.
This itinerary follows a smart O'ahu transport strategy: skip the rental car on Days 1 and 2 (explore Waikiki, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Downtown and Ala Moana on foot, by bike and with the HOLO Bus Card), then rent a car inside Waikiki for Days 3 and 4 to circle the Windward Coast and North Shore. Read our 3 mandatory reservations checklist before Day 1.
Day 1 (No Car): Diamond Head Hike, Leonard's Malasadas & Waikiki Surf
- Morning: hike to the 232-metre summit of Diamond Head State Monument (Le'ahi) (visit the KCC Farmers' Market across the street on Saturdays), then walk to 1952 Leonard's Bakery on Kapahulu Avenue for hot Sugar & Haupia Malasadas and fresh poke at Ono Seafood.
- Afternoon & Sunset: relax on Waikiki Beach, visit the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, take a beginner longboard surf lesson in front of the pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel, slurp noodles at Marukame Udon, and wade onto a beach-loading catamaran for a sunset sail.
Day 2 (No Car): Pearl Harbor, Royal 'Iolani Palace & Magic Island Sunset
- Morning (No Bags): take a taxi, rideshare or TheBus Route 20 / W Line to Pearl Harbor for the Navy launch to the USS Arizona Memorial and the Ford Island shuttle to the Battleship USS Missouri.
- Afternoon & Sunset: tour 1882 'Iolani Palace, the King Kamehameha Statue and Bishop Museum, then browse the street-art murals in Kaka'ako and watch sunset over Waikiki from Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Day 3 (Car Day 1): Hanauma Bay, Makapu'u Lighthouse & Lanikai Beach
- Morning: pick up a Waikiki rental car to snorkel among parrotfish and sea turtles inside Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (closed Mon and Tues).
- Afternoon: pass Halona Blowhole, walk the paved trail to the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Overlook, and swim at Kailua Beach Park & Lanikai Beach before returning via Manoa Falls and Tantalus Lookout.
Day 4 (Car Day 2): Jurassic Valley & North Shore Loop
- Full Day Loop: ring the brass bell at the Byodo-In Temple, tour Jurassic Valley at Kualoa Ranch, then circle the North Shore for Giovanni's Shrimp Truck, Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay & Waterfall (or Toa Luau), and Matsumoto Shave Ice in Hale'iwa.
