Hiking Diamond Head Crater (Le'ahi): Reservations, the 99 Stairs & Saturday KCC Farmers' Market

Climbing inside a 300,000-year-old volcanic crater to a WWI coastal artillery bunker 232 metres above the turquoise reef.

Known to Native Hawaiians as Le'ahi ('Brow of the Ahi Tuna') and renamed Diamond Head in the 1820s when British sailors mistook glittering calcite crystals in the rock for diamonds, this 300,000-year-old, 142-hectare volcanic tuff cone defines Honolulu's skyline. In 1908, the U.S. Army turned the crater into Fort Ruger, carving a mule trail, tunnels and a four-level spotting bunker into the 232-metre coastal rim.

1. Pre-Book a Mandatory Timed Entry Reservation Online

Walk-up tickets are no longer sold at the booth. Non-residents must reserve online at gostateparks.hawaii.gov up to 30 days in advance (per pedestrian, plus a vehicle pass if parking inside):

  • Tip if Vehicle Parking Is Sold Out: crater parking sells out weeks ahead, but pedestrian walk-in slots usually remain available. Book a walk-in ticket and take TheBus Route 2 or 23 from Waikiki, ride a Biki bike, or take a rideshare to the tunnel entrance and walk five minutes inside.
  • Pick the Earliest Morning Slot: the upper switchbacks have no shade, and by mid-morning the volcanic rock reflects strong heat. Hiking at dawn brings cool breezes and soft light.

2. What the Hike Is Like (2.6 km Round-Trip, 171m Gain)

After a paved 300-metre start, the trail climbs volcanic switchbacks up the crater wall, passes through a 68-metre lighted tunnel, and reaches the steep 99-step staircase. To bypass the 99 vertical stairs and spiral bunker ladder, take the left-hand exterior path at the base, which reaches the same summit platforms via gentler outdoor steps overlooking the 1917 Diamond Head Lighthouse, coral reefs and Waikiki Beach.

3. Saturday Mornings: The KCC Farmers' Market

Across from the crater entrance at Kapi'olani Community College (KCC) is O'ahu's largest Saturday morning Farmers' Market, where over 70 stalls serve grilled Kona abalone, Kaua'i shrimp, sugarcane juice and mochi waffles. On any day, walk five minutes down Monsarrat Avenue for an acai bowl at Bogart's Cafe or a blueberry cream cheese scone at Diamond Head Market & Grill.
