Best Time to Visit Honolulu & O'ahu: Year-Round Sunshine, Winter North Shore Surf & Shoulder Seasons

Why O'ahu is a 365-day tropical destination, and how to choose between winter's 30-foot North Shore surf shows and summer's calm snorkelling.

Protected by the 900-metre barrier of the Ko'olau Mountains, Honolulu and Waikiki enjoy one of the most stable, pleasant climates on planet Earth: every single month of the year, afternoon highs in Waikiki sit between 26.5°C (80°F in January) and 31.5°C (89°F in August), cooled by refreshing northeast trade winds. What changes dramatically between winter and summer is which side of the island has big waves and which side is glass-calm.

1. Winter (November to March): Giant North Shore Surf, Humpback Whales & Calm South Shore

  • The Winter Wave Flip (Big North / Calm South): from November through March, giant North Pacific swells create 6-to-12-metre (20-to-40-foot) waves along the North Shore, when professional surfing competitions take over Pipeline, Sunset and Waimea. Meanwhile, down on the South Shore (Waikiki, Ala Moana and Ko Olina), the ocean stays gentle and swimmable all winter.
  • Humpback Whale Season (December to April): thousands of North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters to calve; spot spouting whales right from the elevated cliffs of the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail and Diamond Head.

2. Late Spring, Summer & Autumn (April to October): Calm North Shore Snorkelling & Festivals

  • The Summer Wave Flip (Calm North / Fun South Surf): from May through September, the North Shore goes completely flat, turning Waimea Bay, Sharks Cove and Three Tables into the finest snorkelling and swimming coves on O'ahu. At the same time, gentle summer south swells roll into Waikiki Beach for longboard surfing.
  • The Two Shoulder Windows (Mid-April to Early June & September to Mid-November): accommodation rates in Waikiki dip significantly, queues at major attractions are shorter, and the ocean water sits at a comfortable 26°C to 27°C.
  • Signature Cultural Events: May Day is Lei Day (1 May) at Kapi'olani Park; Lantern Floating Hawaii illuminates Ala Moana Beach on Memorial Day; the King Kamehameha Floral Parade marches from 'Iolani Palace to Waikiki in mid-June; and the month-long Aloha Festivals celebrate Hawaiian culture every September.
