O'ahu's Legendary North Shore: Hale'iwa Surf Town, Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline & Sea Turtles
Driving the 'Seven-Mile Miracle' of O'ahu's North Shore, from 30-foot winter surf at Pipeline and Waimea Bay to garlic shrimp trucks and Matsumoto Shave Ice.
Forty-five minutes north of Honolulu (either up Interstate H-2 past the Dole Plantation, where you can stop for dairy-free Pineapple Dole Whip, or continuing north from Kualoa Ranch) stretches O'ahu's North Shore. Along an 11-kilometre (7-mile) shoreline called the 'Seven-Mile Miracle' sit 36 famous reef breaks that transform between winter and summer:
- In Winter (November to March, Big-Wave Spectacle): North Pacific storms send colossal groundswells that slam into shallow reefs as 6-to-15-metre (20-to-50-foot) waves, hosting the Vans Pipe Masters and the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. Never swim here in winter; watch the surfers safely from the sand.
- In Summer (May to September, Calm Lagoon): the giant waves vanish completely, turning Waimea Bay and Sharks Cove into a flat swimming and snorkelling paradise.
The 5 Best Stops Along the North Shore (West to East)
- Hale'iwa Town & Matsumoto Shave Ice: cross the 1921 concrete bridge over the Anahulu River into plantation-style Hale'iwa. Queue at Matsumoto Shave Ice (since 1951) for a rainbow cone topped with vanilla ice cream, condensed milk and Japanese azuki beans.
- Laniakea Beach ('Turtle Beach'): watch wild Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles rest on the sand from a respectful distance of at least 3 metres (10 feet).
- Waimea Bay & Waimea Valley Waterfall: across the highway from golden Waimea Bay spans 1,800-acre Waimea Valley (paid admission), where a shaded, paved 1.2-kilometre botanical walk leads past Hawaiian Hale houses to 14-metre Waimea Falls, a lifeguarded waterfall pool with free life jackets for swimming. Above Waimea sits the free ancient temple site of Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau.
- Sharks Cove & Banzai Pipeline ('Ehukai Beach Park): snorkel the tide pools of Sharks Cove in summer, then walk onto the sand at 'Ehukai Beach Park to stand right in front of the Banzai Pipeline, where waves barrel just 40 metres offshore.
- Kahuku Garlic Shrimp Trucks: feast on butter-garlic shrimp at Giovanni's Shrimp Truck, Romy's or Fumi's and fresh tropical fruit at Kahuku Farms.
