Kampala 3-Day Itinerary: Royal Hills, Minarets and Lake Victoria
Three days grouped by hill and valley covering Old Kampala, the Buganda Kingdom and Lake Victoria.
This three-day route groups sights by neighbouring hills so you spend your mornings exploring royal palaces, cathedrals and markets rather than sitting in valley traffic. Review our practical briefing on visas and transport before you arrive.
Day 1: Old Kampala Mosque Minaret, Nakasero Market & Kololo
- Morning: start on Old Kampala Hill at the Uganda National Mosque (Gaddafi Mosque); tour the stained-glass prayer hall and climb the 304 steps of the minaret for a complete 360-degree orientation over Kampala's hills.
- Midday: head to the foot of Nakasero Hill to walk through the tropical fruit and spice aisles of Nakasero Market, browse bark-cloth and basketry stalls at Buganda Road Craft Market, and sit down for a traditional steamed banana-leaf luwombo lunch with mashed matooke.
- Afternoon: visit the Uganda Museum on Kira Road to hear the traditional amadinda xylophone and inspect ethnographic displays, then drive up to Kikaya Hill to stroll the tranquil gardens of the Bahá'í Mother Temple of Africa.
- Evening: unwind along John Babiiha (Acacia) Avenue in Kololo with a freshly griddled roadside rolex wrap or dinner at a hillside bistro.
Day 2: Buganda Kingdom Heritage: Kasubi Royal Tombs, Mengo & Twin Cathedrals
- Morning: travel to Kasubi Hill to visit the UNESCO-listed Kasubi Royal Tombs (remembering long skirts or wraps for women); remove your shoes to step inside the great thatched dome of Muzibu Azaala Mpanga.
- Midday: continue south to Mengo Hill to see the Bulange (Buganda Parliament) and walk down the clan-totem-lined Royal Mile to the gates of Mengo Palace (Lubiri) and bird-filled Kabaka's Lake.
- Afternoon: climb the twin western ridges of Namirembe Hill (St Paul's Anglican Cathedral) and Rubaga Hill (St Mary's Catholic Cathedral) for sweeping views back toward the downtown skyline.
Day 3: Lake Victoria Shore (Munyonyo & Ggaba) and Ndere Cultural Centre
- Morning: optional early canoe excursion into Mabamba Bay Wetland on Lake Victoria to spot the prehistoric shoebill stork in the papyrus channels, or a relaxed morning coffee in Muyenga (Tank Hill).
- Midday: head down to the Lake Victoria waterfront at Ggaba Landing Site or Munyonyo for whole charcoal-grilled or crispy Nile tilapia by the water and a late-afternoon boat ride across Murchison Bay.
- Evening: finish in Ntinda at the Ndere Cultural Centre for an open-air Ugandan dinner and a joyful evening of traditional drumming and dance from across Uganda before your Entebbe Expressway transfer.
