Best Time to Visit Kampala

Equatorial highland warmth tempered by Lake Victoria breezes, plus the June-August and Dec-Feb dry seasons.

Although Kampala lies less than forty kilometres north of the Equator, its elevation of roughly 1,200 metres above sea level and the vast body of water of Lake Victoria immediately to the south keep temperatures remarkably comfortable all year round. Daytime highs sit between 26°C and 29°C in every month, while nights drop to a mild 17°C to 18°C. Because Uganda has a bimodal equatorial rainfall pattern, two sunny dry seasons stand out as the best times to visit.

The June to August Dry Season is the prime window for combining Kampala with wildlife safaris and primate trekking across western Uganda. Days in the capital are warm and slightly breezy (around 26°C to 27°C), walking paths around the Kasubi Royal Tombs, Mengo Hill and the Bahá'í Temple gardens are firm and dry, and haze clears after occasional brief lakeside showers to reveal crisp views from the top of the Uganda National Mosque minaret.

The December to February Dry Season is slightly warmer (reaching 28°C to 29°C by afternoon) and brings a festive, sociable energy to the city as Ugandans living abroad return home for the holidays. Sunset boat cruises from Munyonyo across Murchison Bay, outdoor concerts and evening performances at the Ndere Cultural Centre are in full swing, and migratory waterbirds fill the papyrus fringes of Mabamba Swamp.

The Two Rainy Seasons (March to May, and September to November) bring lush green hillsides, purple jacaranda blossoms and scarlet flame trees, alongside dramatic tropical thunderstorms, with April and November seeing the most frequent downpours. Even then, storms usually build in the late afternoon or overnight, leaving mornings bright and fresh for museum, gallery and market visits in Nakasero and Kololo. Hotel rates dip slightly during these green months; just allow extra travel time between hills when heavy rain slows valley traffic, and check what to wear in Kampala before you pack.
