What to Wear in Kampala
Breathable tropical fabrics, respectful dress for royal Buganda sites and mosques, and closed walking shoes.
Dressing well in Kampala means staying cool under the equatorial sun while respecting the traditional etiquette of the Buganda Kingdom and the city's hilltop mosques and cathedrals. Ugandans dress neatly and take real care with their appearance; scruffy beachwear or short gym shorts look out of place in the capital even on a hot afternoon.
Sacred Buganda royal sites, mosques and cathedrals
- Ankle-length skirts or wraps for women at Kasubi Royal Tombs: the Kasubi Tombs are a deeply sacred living shrine of the Buganda monarchy, not a secular museum. Women are strictly required to wear a long skirt or dress reaching below the calves (or wrap a traditional lesu / sarong around the waist over trousers before entering the courtyard), and everyone removes their shoes before stepping onto the woven reed mats inside the royal mausoleum.
- Modest coverage at the Uganda National Mosque: at Old Kampala Mosque, both men and women should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees; the mosque reception lends complimentary full-length wraps and headscarves to female visitors before the guided tour and minaret climb.
- Breathable cottons, linens and a light evening layer: pack loose linen shirts, cotton chinos, polo shirts and midi dresses for 28°C afternoons, paired with a light cardigan, denim jacket or cotton overshirt for breezy evenings on the ridges of Kololo, Muyenga or lakeside Munyonyo.
Footwear, sun protection and rain
Bring closed, grippy walking trainers or leather loafers rather than thin flip-flops: red laterite soil on hillside lanes turns dusty in January and slick after an April downpour, and closed shoes are much safer if you hop on a regulated SafeBoda motorbike or board a wooden fishing canoe at Ggaba. Slip a compact umbrella or packable rain shell, a wide-brimmed sun hat, polarised sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and evening DEET insect repellent into your daypack for lakeside dinners, and check seasonal weather before departure.
