Where to Stay in Kampala: Best Hills Compared

Choosing between central hilltop cafés in Kololo and Nakasero versus Lake Victoria breezes in Muyenga and Munyonyo.

Because valley traffic in Kampala can be slow at rush hour, picking the right hill makes a huge difference to your trip. As a rule, stay on one of the central or south-eastern hills rather than down in the noisy commercial basin around Nakivubo.

Kololo and Kamwokya (best all-round base for dining, cafés and greenery)

Draped over a quiet, tree-shaded ridge immediately north-east of the city centre, Kololo is Kampala's premier diplomatic and lifestyle neighbourhood. Wide avenues lined with mango and jacaranda trees converge on John Babiiha Avenue (Acacia Avenue), where speciality coffee roasters, rooftop cocktail bars, international bistros, supermarkets and shopping malls sit within an easy ten-minute walk of one another. You are right next to the Uganda Museum and craft markets in neighbouring Kamwokya, and only fifteen minutes by ride-hailing car or SafeBoda from Old Kampala Hill.

Upper Nakasero (central five-star hotels and walkable civic sights)

Directly west of Kololo across the golf course valley, Nakasero Hill is split in two: the lower slope holds Nakasero Market and busy banking streets, while Upper Nakasero around State House and the All Saints' Cathedral is calm, polished and home to Kampala's flagship five-star business hotels and garden brasseries. Staying on the upper ridge gives you the shortest morning drive to Old Kampala National Mosque and the Buganda Kingdom sights on Mengo and Kasubi hills.

Muyenga / Tank Hill and Bugolobi (Lake Victoria views and creative bistros)

South-east of the centre, Muyenga (known locally as Tank Hill after the water reservoirs at its crest) rises steeply above Murchison Bay. Its winding cobblestone and tarmac lanes hold characterful boutique guesthouses, Ethiopian and Ugandan garden restaurants, and breezy terraces looking out over Lake Victoria. Neighbouring Bugolobi offers leafy mid-range apartment hotels and converted coffee-warehouse cafés.

Munyonyo (lakeside resort grounds and expressway convenience)

Right on the shore of Lake Victoria at the southern end of the Entebbe-Kampala Expressway spur, Munyonyo suits travellers who want resort swimming pools, palm gardens, marina boat cruises and a traffic-free 35-minute link back to Entebbe Airport at the end of a three-day Kampala stay.
