Lake Tahoe
North America's largest alpine lake at 1,897 metres (6,225 feet) straddling the California, Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada, where the glacier-carved fjord of Emerald Bay and the turquoise granite boulders of Sand Harbor meet 15 acclaimed ski resorts, the Heavenly Gondola and the 72-mile shoreline drive.
Quick decisions
How many days?
3 to 4 days: South Lake Tahoe, the Heavenly Mountain Gondola and Emerald Bay State Park (Vikingsholm Castle and Rubicon Trail) on day one, the Nevada East Shore (Sand Harbor, biking the East Shore Trail to Memorial Point and Bonsai Rock) on day two, North and West Shore highlights (Tahoe City, Eagle Rock, D.L. Bliss and Truckee) on day three, and kayaking or skiing Palisades Tahoe on day four. Follow our multi-day route.
Where should I stay?
South Lake Tahoe / Stateline: liveliest base with the Heavenly Gondola walking village, lakeside beaches, casinos and the most hotel options for every budget. North Shore (Tahoe City, Kings Beach & Incline Village) or West Shore: quieter, pine-shaded Old Tahoe cabin charm closer to Sand Harbor. Compare bases in our lodging guide.
Do I need a car?
Yes to drive the 72-mile shoreline loop; use free TART buses and the TART Connect app locally. Beach parking lots fill early in the morning in July/August, use the East Shore Express shuttle for Sand Harbor and free microtransit vans in North/South Tahoe.
Best for
Turquoise alpine coves & clear kayaking: 22-metre underwater visibility over submerged granite boulders at Sand Harbor and Bonsai Rock. Acclaimed skiing: 15 resorts led by Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood. Panoramic ridge hikes: Rubicon Trail, Monkey Rock and Tahoe Rim Trail.
Before you go
Book your Sand Harbor day-use parking reservation at 'reserveamerica.com' (required April 15, Oct 15 in the late morning): you can no longer just drive into Sand Harbor on summer mornings without a pre-booked standard fare/standard fare reservation or riding the shuttle. Read our practical briefing.
Getting around
From Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO, 45 mins northeast) or Sacramento Airport (SMF, 2 hours west): easy highway or South Tahoe Airporter shuttle access. Details in arrival and transport.
Continue your trip
Detour 30 minutes to Donner Pass or 1859 silver boomtown Virginia City, or drive 3 hours south down US-395 along the Eastern Sierra to Yosemite's Tioga Pass.
Overview
Cradled at 1,897 metres (6,225 feet) above sea level in a fault-block basin between the crest of the Sierra Nevada on the west and the Carson Range on the east, straddling the state line with two-thirds in California and one-third in Nevada on the ancestral homeland of the Washoe Tribe (Waší∙šiw), who have gathered at Da ow a ga ('Edge of the Lake') for thousands of years, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. At 501 metres (1,645 feet) deep (holding enough 99.994% pure snowmelt water to cover the entire state of California 14 inches deep), its immense depth prevents the lake from ever freezing over in winter and gives its rocky coves a tropical, Caribbean-turquoise glow surrounded by sugar pines and snow-streaked 3,000-metre peaks.
In the southwestern corner of the 116-kilometre (72-mile) shoreline, glaciers carved the dramatic fjord of Emerald Bay State Park, home to Fannette Island's stone Tea House, 1929 Vikingsholm Castle and the cliffside Rubicon Trail leading north to D.L. Bliss and Sugar Pine Point on the quiet West Shore. Across the lake on the undeveloped Nevada East Shore gleam the smooth white granite boulders and neon-blue coves of Sand Harbor State Park, the paved Tahoe East Shore Trail, Bonsai Rock and Secret Cove. At the southern end, the Heavenly Mountain Gondola rises directly out of walkable South Lake Tahoe, while the northern shore strings together Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village and historic railroad town Truckee. In winter, 400+ inches of Sierra snow blanket Palisades Tahoe (site of the 1960 Winter Olympics), Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood. Start with our before-you-go briefing and top things to do in Lake Tahoe.
Getting there
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in Nevada is the closest and easiest gateway, sitting just 45 minutes from North Lake Tahoe (Incline Village / Truckee) and 60 minutes from South Lake Tahoe (connected hourly by the South Tahoe Airporter luxury coach). Alternatively, Sacramento International Airport (SMF) sits 2 hours west via I-80 or US-50, and the San Francisco Bay Area is a 3.5-to-4-hour drive. Once at the lake, download the 100% free 'TART Connect' on-demand microtransit app (which acts like a free Uber across North/West Tahoe) and the 'Lake Link' app in South Lake Tahoe, and use the East Shore Express shuttle to skip beach parking headaches. See getting to Lake Tahoe and how the free shuttles and 72-mile loop work.
Where to stay
Lake Tahoe is divided into four distinct regions around its 72-mile rim: stay in South Lake Tahoe / Stateline (straddling the CA, NV line) if you want the liveliest pedestrian village at the base of the Heavenly Gondola, wide sandy beaches, lakefront resorts (like Edgewood Tahoe) and the best budget-to-midrange motel and condo selection; stay on the North Shore (Tahoe City, Kings Beach or Incline Village) for relaxed pine-forest charm and quick access to Sand Harbor; stay on the West Shore (Homewood to Meeks Bay) for quiet historic lakeside cabins; or stay 15 minutes north in historic 1860s Truckee or Northstar/Palisades for mountain-village charm. Compare all shores in where to stay in Lake Tahoe.
Things to do
Stand at the Inspiration Point overlook above Emerald Bay State Park, hike down to 1929 Vikingsholm Castle and walk the cliffside Rubicon Trail, swim and paddle among the giant turquoise granite boulders of Sand Harbor and cycle the 3-mile Tahoe East Shore Trail from Incline Village, ride the Heavenly Mountain Gondola to the 2,780-metre Observation Deck, rent a 100% transparent Clear-Bottom Kayak or cruise Emerald Bay aboard the paddlewheeler MS Dixie II, hike to Monkey Rock, Eagle Rock and Cave Rock, explore Tahoe City (Fanny Bridge rafting) and historic Truckee, mountain-bike the world-famous Flume Trail, see the October Kokanee Salmon Run at Taylor Creek, and ski Palisades Tahoe and Heavenly. Full list in things to do in Lake Tahoe.
Food and drink
Lake Tahoe dining is all about sunny wooden piers jutting over cobalt-blue water and cozy timber mountain lodges: frosty rum-and-peach 'Wet Woody' cocktails on the pier at Gar Woods Grill & Pier in Carnelian Bay (and sister spots Riva Grill and Bar of America), sunset bistros on the water at Sunnyside Resort and Chambers Landing (California's oldest 1875 overwater bar), elevated alpine dining at Edgewood Restaurant and Evan's American Gourmet Cafe, tri-tip sandwiches at Full Belly Deli, and hearty mountain breakfasts at Fire Sign Cafe and Red Hut Cafe. Read more in our Lake Tahoe lakefront dining guide.
Culture
From the traditional Washoe basketry masterworks of Dat So La Lee and the 1920s Nordic-and-Old-Tahoe stone mansions of Vikingsholm, Thunderbird Lodge and Hellman-Ehrman Estate to the legacy of the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, Lake Tahoe blends Sierra pioneer history with the conservation ethic of 'Keep Tahoe Blue'.
