Getting to Lake Tahoe: Reno-Tahoe Airport (RNO, 45 Mins), Sacramento (SMF) & Bay Area Drives
Why Reno-Tahoe Airport (RNO) puts you at the lake in 45 minutes, plus Sacramento (SMF), the South Tahoe Airporter and Amtrak to Truckee.
Sitting right on the California, Nevada border between Interstate 80 on the north and U.S. Highway 50 on the south, Lake Tahoe is served by two super-convenient airports and a direct cross-country train station.
1. Option A: Fly Into 'Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)' (45 to 60 Mins Away)
Served by 11+ airlines with nonstop flights from 25+ hubs, RNO Airport sits at the eastern foot of the mountains in Reno, Nevada:
- 45 Minutes to North Lake Tahoe: pick up your rental car inside the terminal parking structure and drive 45 minutes up scenic Mount Rose Highway (NV-431), which crests an 2,716-metre (8,911-foot) pass with a sweeping pull-out overlooking the entire lake before dropping straight into Incline Village and Sand Harbor (or take I-80 West 35 minutes to Truckee).
- 60 Minutes to South Lake Tahoe: drive south down 4-lane I-580 through Carson Valley and climb gentle 4-lane U.S. Highway 50 over Spooner Summit straight into Stateline / South Lake Tahoe. Staying in South Lake Tahoe without a car? Board the South Tahoe Airporter luxury coach right outside RNO Baggage Claim , it runs 8 to 10 times daily straight to the doors of the major Stateline/Heavenly Village resorts (Harrah's, Harvey's, Caesars Republic, Golden Nugget and Margaritaville).
- North Shore Airport Shuttle: North Lake Tahoe Express runs daily shared shuttles from RNO directly to Incline Village, Kings Beach, Tahoe City, Palisades and Truckee.
2. Option B: Flying Into 'Sacramento (SMF, 2 Hours)' or Driving From San Francisco (3.5 Hours)
- Sacramento International Airport: zero city traffic. Take Interstate 80 East over Donner Pass to Truckee and the North Shore (1h 55m), OR take U.S. Highway 50 East along the American River Canyon over Echo Summit straight into South Lake Tahoe (2h 05m).
- From San Francisco / Bay Area & The 'Amtrak Train / Thruway Bus': drive I-80 East (to North Tahoe) or I-80 → US-50 East (to South Tahoe), leaving around midday on Fridays to beat Bay Area weekend ski/beach traffic. Without a car, ride the daily Amtrak California Zephyr from Emeryville/Sacramento directly into historic Downtown Truckee (or take the Capitol Corridor + Amtrak Thruway Bus straight into South Lake Tahoe).
