Lake Tahoe: What to Know Before You Go
Booking Sand Harbor reservations ahead of time, driving the 72-mile shoreline clockwise, and keeping food locked away from Tahoe's clever Black Bears.
Short answer: pre-book your morning vehicle reservation for Sand Harbor State Park at reserveamerica.com (required from 15 April to 15 October in the late morning, or ride the East Shore Express shuttle from Incline Village), always drive the 72-mile lake loop clockwise so every lakeside turnout is on your right-hand side, and never leave even a single granola bar or scented lip balm inside your parked car (Tahoe's resident Black Bears can pop a car door handle open in 10 seconds).
1. The #1 New Rule: 'Sand Harbor State Park' Requires Advance Morning Reservations.
Gone are the days of lining up on Highway 28 early in the morning for Sand Harbor. Between 15 April and 15 October, every personal vehicle entering Sand Harbor throughout the day must hold a pre-booked reservation from reserveamerica.com . (Missed out on a car permit? Either enter around midday when walk-up cars are allowed space-permitting, OR park at Incline Village and ride the standard fare East Shore Express Bus or cycle the 3-mile Tahoe East Shore Trail right onto the beach with zero car permit needed). Before setting out, review our lake-tahoe things to do and heavenly gondola south lake tahoe and stateline guide so you can coordinate local transport, walking distances and seasonal daylight hours across each neighbourhood.
2. Three Essential Lake Tahoe Rules
- Always Drive the 72-Mile Loop CLOCKWISE: when circling the lake, driving clockwise puts your car in the outer lane directly next to the water, so you can pull safely into every scenic overlook at Emerald Bay and Cave Rock without crossing oncoming traffic.
- Respect 'Cold Water Shock' in May & June: fed by melting snow, Lake Tahoe's water temperature in May and June is a frigid 10°C to 13°C (50°F, 55°F) before warming to a refreshing 20°C, 21°C (68°F, 70°F) in late July and August.
- Black Bear Car-Break-In Prevention: remove 100% of food, coolers, trash and scented toiletries from your car every night.
