3 to 4 Days in Lake Tahoe: Emerald Bay, Sand Harbor East Shore Trail, Heavenly Gondola & 72-Mile Loop

A smart 3-to-4-day plan that puts you at Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor early in the morning and covers every shore without traffic stress.

This itinerary is built around the single most important logistics rule at Lake Tahoe: start early in the morning at the day's marquee beach or trailhead, and group your days cleanly by shoreline. Read our Sand Harbor reservation guide before Day 1.

Day 1: Emerald Bay, Vikingsholm Castle, Taylor Creek & Heavenly Gondola

  • Morning: drive straight to Emerald Bay State Park. Stop at Inspiration Point, park at the Vikingsholm lot, walk across the road to see Eagle Falls, and hike down to tour 1929 Vikingsholm Castle, kayak out to Fannette Island's Stone Tea House, and walk part of the cliffside Rubicon Trail.
  • Midday: five minutes south on Highway 89, stop at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center to view the underground glass windows of the Stream Profile Chamber and stroll the lakeside estates of the Tallac Historic Site.
  • Afternoon: ride the Heavenly Mountain Gondola from Heavenly Village up to the 2,780-metre Observation Deck, then finish with dinner at Base Camp Pizza Co. or sunset drinks at Edgewood Tahoe.

Day 2: Sand Harbor, Tahoe East Shore Bike Trail, Monkey Rock & Bonsai Rock

  • Morning: enter Sand Harbor State Park with a morning reservation or park in Incline Village and cycle the 3-mile Tahoe East Shore Trail past Hidden Beach into Sand Harbor. Swim among the granite boulders and rent a clear-bottom kayak at Divers Cove.
  • Afternoon: hike the trail behind Tunnel Creek Café up to Monkey Rock or cycle the Flume Trail, then scramble down to watch the sunset at Bonsai Rock.

Day 3: North & West Shores, Tahoe City Rafting, Sugar Pine Point & Truckee
