Getting Around Lake Tahoe: The 72-Mile Loop Drive, Free 'TART Connect' & 'Lake Link' Ride Apps.

How to use Lake Tahoe's 100% free on-demand ride apps (TART Connect and Lake Link), zero-fare buses and the 72-mile clockwise loop.

While Lake Tahoe looks compact on a map, the lake measures 35 kilometres long by 19 kilometres wide, and the famous 116-kilometre Shoreline Loop Drive takes 3 hours of pure driving without stops, or a full 6-to-8-hour sightseeing day. Even better: to reduce summer beach traffic, both North and South Lake Tahoe recently launched 100% free public buses AND free Uber-style on-demand microtransit vans.

1. Two 100% free On-Demand Ride Apps + Zero-Fare Buses Around the Lake.

  1. On the North & West Shores + Incline Village & Truckee: 'TART' Buses + The Free 'TART Connect' App.
    • All TART Fixed-Route Buses Are 100% free: Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART) buses run hourly along the entire North and West Shores (from Sugar Pine Point / Meeks Bay through Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach to Crystal Bay / Incline Village, plus up Hwy 89/267 to Palisades Tahoe, Northstar and Truckee) and are free to board.
    • Download the Free 'TART Connect' Smartphone App: inside your zone, open the TART Connect app, request a ride, and within 10 to 15 minutes a shuttle van picks you up at your corner or beach and drops you at any restaurant, hotel or TART bus stop in the zone for 100% free.
  2. In South Lake Tahoe & Stateline: The Free 'Lake Link' App + 'Tahoe Transportation District' Buses.
    • The Free 'Lake Link' App: works just like a free Uber inside the South Lake Tahoe / Stateline / Heavenly Village / Lakeside Beach / Round Hill corridor throughout the day/late in the evening for free.
    • Zero-Fare TTD Local Buses: ride TTD buses across South Lake Tahoe and connect to the standard fare East Shore Express into Sand Harbor.

2. The 'early in the morning or in the afternoon' Summer Beach Parking Rule.

If driving your own rental car in July or August to Emerald Bay, Chimney Beach or Lester Beach, know that roadside lots are 100% full between early in the morning and in the afternoon.
