Lilongwe: What to Know Before You Go
Understanding Lilongwe's numbered Areas, the forest gap between Old Town and City Centre, and Kwacha cash.
Short answer: learn how Lilongwe's split geography and numbered "Areas" work before you arrive, book your guided behind-the-scenes tour at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre ahead of time, and carry Malawi Kwacha (MWK) in cash for markets, craft stalls and local taxis.
Old Town, City Centre and why neighbourhoods are called "Areas"
First-time visitors are often puzzled to hear locals give addresses as "Area 3", "Area 10" or "Area 43". When urban planners designed the new capital in the late 1960s and early 1970s around the existing trading post on the Lilongwe River, they divided the entire municipality into numbered zones rather than named suburbs, and deliberately left a wide green belt of indigenous woodland down the middle. To the south sits Old Town (Areas 1 and 2), home to the central fruit, hardware and fabric markets, bus depots and long-standing Indian and Malawian restaurants, bordered on the west by the leafy residential avenues of Area 3 and Area 9. Four kilometres north across the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre wilderness lies City Centre (Area 19 / Capital Hill), flanked by the diplomatic garden suburbs of Area 10, Area 11, Area 12 and Area 43.
Malawi Kwacha (MWK), cards and foreign notes
The national currency is the Malawi Kwacha (MWK). While major hotels, lodges, supermarkets and upmarket cafés in Area 3 and City Centre accept Visa cards, ATM cash limits per withdrawal can be modest and daily street transactions (such as Old Town craft stalls, taxis and roadside roasted maize) are strictly cash in Kwacha. If you bring US dollars or euros to exchange at licensed forex bureaus, ensure the bills are crisp, untorn and printed after 2013.
Chitenje etiquette and friendly greetings
Malawians are exceptionally polite and unhurried. Greet people with Moni (hello) and Muli bwanji? ("How are you?", answered with Ndili bwino, kaya inu?, meaning "I am fine, and you?") before launching into business or bargaining. Always ask before taking portraits in Old Town or Lizulu Market. Compare numbered neighbourhoods in where to stay in Lilongwe.
