Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Parliament and Kamuzu Mausoleum

Walking the 180-hectare Lilongwe Wildlife Centre before visiting the Parliament Building and Kamuzu Mausoleum.

What sets Lilongwe apart from almost any other capital city is its geography: instead of concrete filling the valley between historic Old Town and modern City Centre, 180 hectares of protected indigenous riverine woodland run right through the middle of the municipality along the Lingadzi River, bordered directly to the north by Malawi's civic monuments.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre: sanctuary tours and woodland trails

Entered off Kenyatta Drive between Old Town and City Centre, the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre was established in 2007 by the Lilongwe Wildlife Trust as Malawi's only PASA-accredited wildlife rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary. The centre has two parts that you can combine in a morning. First, book a guided sanctuary tour (roughly 60 to 90 minutes) to walk with conservation guides past spacious forest enclosures where orphaned and injured vervet monkeys, yellow baboons, blue monkeys, serval cats, bushpigs and crocodiles are rehabilitated for return to Malawi's national parks; because this is a genuine non-contact sanctuary, animals are never petted or performed with. Second, explore the six kilometres of waymarked nature trails winding along the Lingadzi River through mahogany, fig and acacia woodland, where wild bushbuck, duiker, spotted hyena (nocturnal), Nile monitors and over two hundred bird species live free. Pause afterward on the wooden deck of the forest café for lunch under the canopy.

Kamuzu Mausoleum, Parliament Building and Memorial Tower

Directly north of the Wildlife Centre along Presidential Way rises City Centre and Capital Hill, laid out in the 1970s when President Hastings Kamuzu Banda moved the capital north from Zomba. In a tranquil landscaped park off Presidential Way stands the Kamuzu Mausoleum, the marble resting place of Malawi's first president; its four corner pillars are inscribed with his four national cornerstones (Unity, Loyalty, Obedience and Discipline), and a small visitor gallery explains the post-1964 independence era. Immediately adjacent rises the imposing Chinese-built Parliament Building crowned by a green dome (admired from the outer gates unless you arrange a formal visitor pass ahead, and ask the guards before taking photos), alongside the towering King's African Rifles War Memorial and Viewing Tower, which honours Malawian soldiers of the two World Wars and offers a climbable platform overlooking the green canopy of the capital.

Four Seasons Nursery and Area 10 Gardens

Finish your loop on the northern side of City Centre at Four Seasons off Presidential Way, a peaceful complex of botanical plant nurseries, contemporary craft boutiques, art galleries and shaded garden cafés popular with diplomats and residents from nearby Area 10 and Area 12. Pair these sights with Old Town and Kumbali.
