What to Wear in Lilongwe
Walking shoes for forest trails, respectful knee-length layers for markets and a local chitenje wrap.
Packing for Lilongwe is about balancing comfortable outdoor gear for forest trails and Lake Malawi beaches with respectful, neat clothing for one of southern Africa's most polite and traditional societies. Because the capital sits over a thousand metres above sea level, you will also want a warm evening layer if travelling between May and August.
Clothing for woodland trails, markets and the lake
- Closed walking shoes or light trail trainers: ideal for the dirt paths and river boardwalks of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, the forest trails at Kumbali Cultural Village, and the dusty market bridges between Old Town and Lizulu.
- Breathable cotton and linen layers with knee-length coverage: Malawi is socially conservative. While shorts and swimwear are completely fine beside your lodge pool in Area 3 or on the beach at Senga Bay, both men and women are treated with much greater warmth in Old Town Market, villages and government offices when wearing loose trousers, chinos, jeans or skirts/dresses that cover the knees and shoulders.
- A locally bought chitenje wrap: picking up a two-metre length of wax-print cotton at Lizulu Market is practically a rite of passage; women use it as a wrap-around skirt when visiting rural villages like Kumbali or Chongoni, and it doubles as a beach towel at the lake.
- A warm jumper or fleece jacket (May to August): plateau evenings and early mornings in winter dip below 10°C, especially when dining in open-sided garden restaurants.
- A light rain shell and insect repellent (November to April): essential for afternoon summer showers and dusk verandas; wear long, loose light-coloured trousers and socks after sunset year-round.
What to avoid packing
As in neighbouring Zambia and Zimbabwe, never wear military-style camouflage clothing in Malawi, as camo prints are restricted to the armed forces. Leave flashy jewellery at home when walking through crowded market lanes in Old Town. Check seasonal weather before you pack.
