Where to Stay in Lilongwe: Best Numbered Areas Compared
Decoding Lilongwe's numbered neighbourhoods: Area 3 and Area 9 versus diplomatic Area 10, 12 and 43.
Once you decode Lilongwe's numbered zone system, choosing where to stay becomes simple. Almost all visitors choose between two leafy residential clusters perched on opposite sides of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre: Area 3 and Area 9 on the southern side near Old Town, or Area 10, Area 12 and Area 43 on the northern side near City Centre.
Area 3 and Area 9 (Old Town West: best for garden lodges and restaurants)
Rising up the gentle wooded slope immediately west of Old Town and the Lilongwe Golf Club along Kaunda Road and Likuni Road, Area 3 and neighbouring Area 9 form the most popular base for independent travellers, safari guests and NGO visitors. Old colonial-era bungalows and brick homesteads set in multi-acre gardens have been converted into characterful boutique lodges with swimming pools, outdoor pizza ovens and verandas overlooking indigenous trees. From Area 3, you are a five-minute taxi ride (or twenty-minute daytime walk past the golf course and curio stalls) from Old Town Market and the southern entrance to the Wildlife Centre, and surrounded by Lilongwe's best Italian, Indian and grill restaurants.
Area 10, Area 11, Area 12 and Area 43 (City Centre North: quiet, diplomatic and upscale)
Stretching north and east of Capital Hill and the Parliament precinct, Areas 10, 11, 12 and 43 are Lilongwe's most tranquil, low-density diplomatic suburbs. Wide, peaceful avenues shaded by jacarandas and bougainvillea hold embassies, ambassadorial residences, stylish boutique guesthouses and contemporary café courtyards, with the nurseries and galleries of Four Seasons right on the edge of Area 10. Because these areas sit on the northern side of town, they also cut ten to fifteen minutes off the drive to Kamuzu International Airport (LLW).
City Centre / Area 19 (modern business hotels)
Right around the ministries, banks and convention halls of City Centre stand Lilongwe's larger international-style business hotels. Stay here if you want a full-service hotel next to the Kamuzu Mausoleum and government offices, though the streets grow very quiet after working hours.
Old Town (Areas 1 and 2) and Kumbali Forest Fringe
Staying right inside Area 1 or Area 2 puts markets, bus depots and budget guesthouses outside your door, though nights are noisier than in Area 3 just uphill. Conversely, if you want pure countryside peace twenty minutes south-east of town, book a thatched forest suite at Kumbali Country Lodge inside its 650-hectare dairy and woodland estate. Fit your base into our three-day Lilongwe itinerary.
