Best Time to Visit Manila

Cooler dry breezes from December to February, bright spring skies and the tropical wet season.

Manila has a tropical savanna climate divided into two distinct halves: a sunny dry season from late November through May and a warm, humid wet season (habagat) from June through October. For the most comfortable walking weather along the stone bastions of Intramuros and the food streets of Binondo, plan your visit between December and early March.

Cool Dry Season (December to February) is the prime window for exploring Metro Manila on foot. Daytime highs stay around a manageable 29°C to 30°C with low rainfall (just 2 to 4 rainy days a month) and refreshing evening breezes off Manila Bay when temperatures dip to 22°C to 23°C. The Philippines celebrates the longest Christmas season in the world, culminating in December with illuminated star lanterns (parols), evening night markets and the animated light-and-sound spectacle across Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati. Late January or early February brings massive dragon dances, firecrackers and tikoy rice cakes down Ongpin Street in Binondo for Lunar New Year.

Hot Dry Summer (March to May) brings the brightest blue skies across the archipelago (making it peak season for combining Manila with beaches in Palawan or Boracay), though afternoon temperatures in the city climb to 33°C to 34°C in April and May. During Holy Week (Semana Santa, March or April), millions of residents leave the capital for the provinces: road traffic disappears and devotees stage traditional Visita Iglesia pilgrimages across the churches of Intramuros, though many malls, museums and independent restaurants close completely on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Rainy Season (June to October) is governed by the southwest monsoon (habagat), with July, August and September seeing the heaviest tropical downpours and occasional passing typhoons. Even in the wet months, mornings often start bright before afternoon thunderstorms roll in, making it a rewarding time to focus on Manila's indoor National Museum Complex, Ayala Museum and covered dining arcades.
