Where to Stay in Manila: BGC, Makati and Manila Bay Compared
Choosing between modern pedestrian-friendly BGC and Makati versus historic Manila Bay and Intramuros.
Because Metro Manila is vast and road traffic can be slow during weekday rush hours, your hotel neighbourhood shapes your entire impression of the Philippine capital. First-time visitors almost always face one clear choice: stay in the clean, leafy, walkable modern hubs of Bonifacio Global City (BGC) or Makati and ride into Old Manila for sightseeing, or stay beside Manila Bay and Intramuros to wake up next to the historic landmarks.
Bonifacio Global City (BGC, Taguig: best for walkability, families and modern comfort)
If you want wide tree-shaded pavements where you can stroll safely at any hour between parks, murals, speciality cafes and restaurants, Bonifacio Global City (BGC) is the most pleasant base in Metro Manila. All electric cables run underground, pedestrian crossings are respected, and flagship five-star and boutique hotels cluster around Bonifacio High Street, Burgos Circle and Uptown Bonifacio. The only trade-off is that BGC is not directly on the LRT-1 rail line, so you will use Grab cars (20 minutes to NAIA Airport via the Skyway, 35 to 50 minutes to Intramuros outside peak hours).
Makati: Ayala Center, Salcedo Village and Legazpi Village (best all-round urban base)
Immediately west of BGC, Makati is the established financial and cultural heart of the metropolis, connected by elevated covered pedestrian walkways that keep you dry in rain and cool in midday sun. Staying around Ayala Center and Greenbelt puts the Ayala Museum, department stores and the MRT-3 train (linking to LRT-1 for Old Manila) right at your feet. For a quieter, more residential neighbourhood feel with independent coffee roasters and weekend farmers' markets, pick a boutique hotel or serviced apartment in Legazpi Village (south-west of Greenbelt) or Salcedo Village (north of Ayala Avenue), while nightlife lovers gravitate toward creative Poblacion.
Intramuros, Rizal Park and Manila Bay / Ermita (best for history and short stopovers)
If you only have one or two nights in Manila and want to spend every daylight hour inside walled Intramuros, the National Museum Complex and Binondo Chinatown without commuting across town, stay right in historic Manila. Heritage boutique properties sit inside the walls of Intramuros itself, while grand historic bayfront hotels (led by the 1912 Manila Hotel at the edge of Rizal Park) look straight out toward sunset over Manila Bay.
Newport City / Pasay and Entertainment City (best for overnight airport transits)
If you land late at night and fly out to Palawan, Boracay or Siargao early the next morning, stay in Newport City (connected directly to NAIA Terminal 3 by the air-conditioned Runway Manila footbridge) or along the southern bayfront in Pasay near the Mall of Asia, ten minutes from all four airport terminals via the NAIAX expressway. Fit your base into our three-day Manila itinerary.
