Getting Around Mardin: Old Town Minibuses, Parking Rules and Hiring a Driver
How to use Old Mardin's hop-on minibuses, where to leave a rental car outside the stone alleys, and reaching Dara.
Understanding how traffic works in Old Mardin (Artuklu) before you arrive will save you a major headache, especially if you are driving a rental car. Because the medieval city was built for pedestrians and pack animals on a 40-degree rock slope, only two parallel horizontal streets carry vehicles across the hillside: upper Birinci Cadde (1st Street, running strictly one-way from West to East) and lower İkinci Cadde (2nd Street, running strictly one-way back from East to West).
1. Crucial Rule for Rental Cars: Park Outside and Walk.
Never attempt to turn your rental car off Birinci Cadde into any side lane, they immediately turn into narrow flights of stone steps or dead-end courtyards where cars get wedged between limestone walls. Instead, park your car at one of the two official municipal car parks at either end of the Old Town:
- Cumhuriyet Meydanı Multi-Storey Underground Car Park (At the Western Entrance): right beside the Mardin Museum and Sakıp Sabancı City Museum. Leave your car here and walk (or take the local shuttle minibus) along flat Birinci Cadde to your hotel.
- Savurkapı / Yenikapı Open Car Parks (At the Eastern End): convenient if your mansion hotel is in the eastern quarter near Zinciriye Madrasa or Savurkapı.
2. Hopping the Old Town Municipal Minibuses (Шehiriçi Dolmuş)
Small purple-and-blue municipal minibuses run every 5 minutes in a continuous clockwise loop up Birinci Cadde (from Cumhuriyet Meydanı past Ulu Cami, Şehidiye and PTT to Savurkapı/Diyarbakır Kapı) and back down İkinci Cadde (passing above Kasımıye Madrasa). Tap any contactless Visa or Mastercard when boarding whenever you want to save your legs on the 2-kilometre walk back to the top of town.
3. Getting to Deyrulzafaran, Dara and Midyat Without a Car
- To Deyrulzafaran Monastery (4 km east): take a 10-minute yellow taxi from Savurkapı or Cumhuriyet Meydanı (agreeing with the driver to wait 60 to 75 minutes while you take the monastery tour).
- To Midyat (65 km): direct Midyat Koop minibuses depart every 20 to 30 minutes from Yenişehir (Karayolları / Otogar) right to Midyat in 60 minutes.
- Best Value for Dara + Deyrulzafaran + Midyat + Mor Gabriel: because public minibuses drop you on the main highway 3 km outside Dara and Mor Gabriel, if you don't have a rental car, ask your hotel reception to arrange a private local taxi/driver for a 7-hour day loop (shared between 2 to 4 people, it costs scarcely more than a group bus tour and lets you stop at every viewpoint).
