Mardin: What to Know Before You Go
Navigating Old Mardin's stepped car-free alleys, monastery visiting rules and luggage tips.
Short answer: pack a small overnight bag or call your hotel bellhop before dragging heavy wheeled suitcases up the stone steps of Old Mardin, wear rubber-soled shoes with grip, respect midday prayer breaks at active Syriac Orthodox monasteries, and book dinner tables on panoramic terraces a day ahead.
Old Mardin (Artuklu) vs New Mardin (Yenişehir)
Mardin is split vertically into two completely different cities. At the foot of the mountain on the flat plain lies Yenişehir (New Mardin), a modern city of wide boulevards, shopping centres and apartment blocks. Winding 300 metres up the steep southern cliff face above it is Eski Mardin (Old Mardin / Artuklu), a protected historical reserve where motor vehicles can only drive along a single one-way horizontal spine called Birinci Cadde (1st Street) and returning lower İkinci Cadde (2nd Street). Every single street above and below Birinci Cadde is a stepped pedestrian stone alley connected by vaulted tunnels (abbara) where municipal donkeys still carry rubbish and building stones.
Luggage Strategy and Getting to Your Mansion Hotel
Because taxis cannot enter the stepped alleys above or below Birinci Cadde, always message your Old Mardin hotel 20 minutes before you arrive and ask which numbered stop or landmark on Birinci Cadde (such as Cumhuriyet Meydanı, PTT, Şehidiye or Savurkapı) is closest to their door; a staff member will meet your taxi at the kerb to carry your bags down or up the stone stairs.
Visiting Active Syriac Monasteries and Madrasas
Deyrulzafaran Monastery, Kırklar Church and Mor Gabriel are not empty ruins; they are living monastic communities where monks, nuns and students pray daily in Classical Syriac (Aramaic). Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees, and note that monasteries typically pause guided tours for an hour at midday (in the late morning to around midday) and close in the afternoon or in the early evening.
