Best Time to Visit Mykonos: Warm September Seas, May/June Sun and the Meltemi
Why late May, June, September and early October deliver the calmest seas, warmest water and best hotel rates.
Sitting in the central Aegean, Mykonos enjoys a dry, sun-drenched Mediterranean island climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year and virtually zero rain between May and September. While the high-energy party season peaks in July and August, experienced Cyclades travellers overwhelmingly prefer late May to late June and September to mid-October.
Late Spring & Early Summer (May and June) shows Mykonos at its most photogenic. The hills still have a touch of spring green and wild poppies, every house in Chora gleams with fresh April Easter whitewash, daytime temperatures climb from 23°C in May to 27°C in June, and you get the longest daylight hours of the year for walking Delos Island without heat exhaustion. All beach restaurants and water taxis are open by mid-May, while hotel prices are significantly lower than in high summer.
High Summer & The Meltemi Wind (July and August) brings cloudless skies, 28°C to 30°C afternoons and the full international nightlife and superyacht season. Be aware of two mid-summer realities: hotel rates and beach-club demand reach their annual peak (book 3 to 6 months ahead), and the dry northern Meltemi wind blows strongest in July and August, keeping the air wonderfully cool, but occasionally making ferry crossings bumpy and pushing swimmers to the sheltered southern bays.
Golden Autumn: The Best Month of All (September and Early October) is the undisputed sweet spot. In September, the Meltemi wind calms down, leaving northern beaches like Agios Sostis and Fokos as flat as glass., the Aegean Sea is warmer in September and October (23°C to 25°C) than it is in May or June, daytime air sits at a balmy 25°C to 27°C, and Chora's alleys return to a relaxed pace.
Low Season (November to Early April) is quiet, mild and breezy (13°C to 18°C); most beach resorts and seasonal boutiques close, though Chora's local cafes and Ano Mera remain lived-in year-round. Check what to wear in Mykonos before packing.
