Walking Mykonos Town (Chora): Matogianni Street, Old Harbour and Hidden Gardens
Navigating the pirate-foiling whitewashed labyrinth of Chora from the Old Harbour fishing boats to Cine Manto.
Built on a flat coastal shelf rather than a high cliff caldera like Santorini, Mykonos Town (known locally as Chora) is a masterpiece of vernacular Cycladic urban planning. Motor vehicles are banned completely from its interior lanes: every single street is paved with grey local granite flagstones outlined in hand-painted white limewash, flanked by two-storey cube houses whose outside stone staircases climb to brightly painted wooden doors and bougainvillea arbours.
Why Chora Was Built as a Deliberate Labyrinth
If you lose your bearings five minutes after stepping off the harbour promenade, that is by design. When Mykonos was rebuilt in the 16th to 18th centuries, island builders created a twisting, non-grid maze of dead-end courtyards and hairpin turns for two practical reasons: first, to break the force of the fierce northern Meltemi gales so wind could never funnel straight down a street; and second, to confuse invading Aegean pirates so locals could ambush raiders from upper balconies while escaping across interconnected flat rooftops.
Four Landmarks on a Morning Walk Through Chora
- Manto Mavrogenous Square & The Old Harbour Waterfront (Gialos): start at the marble bust of Manto Mavrogenous, the wealthy Mykonian heroine who spent her entire family fortune equipping ships to fight against the Ottomans in the 1821 Greek War of Independence, and stroll the curving waterfront past the 1780 church of Agios Nikolaos of the Cadene (with its blue dome right at the water's edge) and the morning vegetable and fish boats.
- Matogianni Street (Matoyianni): turn inland onto Chora's most famous artery, where whitewashed arches, jewellery ateliers, linen boutiques and cafes sit beneath a solid canopy of fuchsia bougainvillea.
- Cine Manto Municipal Garden (The Secret Green Oasis of Chora): right behind Matogianni Street lies a walled botanical garden of towering palms, giant cacti and pine trees that once belonged to a 19th-century merchant mansion, now housing a shaded daytime garden café-restaurant and a beloved open-air summer cinema under the stars.
- Three Wells (Tria Pigadia) & Lena's House Folk Museum: walk five minutes further to the three historic 1722 cast-iron town wells and step inside Lena's House, an intact 19th-century Mykonian ship-captain's townhouse preserving original period furniture, embroidery and courtyard cisterns.
