Where to Stay in Mykonos: Chora (Mykonos Town), Ornos, Platys Gialos and Agios Ioannis
Choosing whether to base yourself on the edge of pedestrianised Chora or right on the sand in Ornos or Platys Gialos.
Choosing where to sleep in Mykonos comes down to a simple trade-off: do you want to step out of your door into the whitewashed evening alleys, restaurants and bus terminals of Mykonos Town (Chora), or do you want to wake up on a sandy beach in Ornos or Platys Gialos and take the 10-minute bus into town for dinner? Compare the five best areas below.
1. Mykonos Town (Chora) & Its Perimeter (Best for First-Timers, Walkability & Short Stays)
If you are visiting for 2 to 4 nights, do not have a rental car, and want to walk to Little Venice, the Delos morning boat and both KTEL bus stations without ever waiting for a taxi at night, stay in or right on the edge of Chora:
- Smart Luggage Tip (Perimeter vs Deep Interior): remember that cars cannot enter the centre of Chora. Booking a boutique hotel on the southern perimeter near Fabrika / Lakka / Kato Mili or on the hillside ring road (Drafaki / Rohari / School of Fine Arts) lets your airport bus or transfer van drop you right at the door while keeping you a 5-minute downhill walk from Matogianni Street.
2. Ornos Bay & Platys Gialos (Best All-Round Beach Bases with Bus & Boat Links)
- Ornos (3 km south of Chora): the most practical beach village on the island, offering a calm, shallow sandy bay, bakeries, supermarkets, pharmacies, waterside fish tavernas and a 10-minute bus ride into Fabrika.
- Platys Gialos (4 km south of Chora): ideal if your priority is beach-hopping, you walk out of your beachfront hotel onto golden sand, board the wooden water-taxi boats to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia right from the pier, and walk 10 minutes along the coastal path to Psarou or Paraga.
3. Agios Ioannis, Agios Stefanos & Elia (Best for Sunset Views, Ferry Convenience or Quiet Luxury)
- Agios Ioannis (4.5 km south-west): refined hillside five-star boutique hotels looking straight west at sunset over Delos Island.
- Agios Stefanos (3 km north, 1 km past Tourlos New Port): a sandy west-facing beach just 3 minutes from the ferry port, very convenient if you have an early morning ferry.
- Elia, Kalafatis & Ano Mera: spacious luxury hillside resorts above Elia's long sandy beach, or quiet, authentic rural villas around inland Ano Mera.
