3 Days in Osaka: Street Food, Castles and a Nara Excursion
A three-day route balancing Osaka's castles, markets and neon canals with a morning trip to Nara.
This three-day plan covers all of Osaka's signature neighbourhoods on the first two days and gives you a clear choice on Day 3 between the ancient temples and bowing deer of Nara (combined with Osaka Bay's Kaiyukan Aquarium) or a full day at Universal Studios Japan.
Day 1: Osaka Castle, Tenjinbashisuji, Umeda Sky Building and Dotonbori Neon
- 09:00: ride the subway to Morinomiya or Tanimachi 4-chome and walk across the massive granite ramparts and moats of Osaka Castle before tour groups build at the keep.
- 12:00: take the Tanimachi Line to Minami-Morimachi for Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and a local lunch along the Tenjinbashisuji Shotengai (Japan's longest shopping arcade).
- 16:00: head to Umeda, walk through Grand Green Osaka and ride the suspended escalator up to the open-air rooftop of the Umeda Sky Building for sunset over the city and bay.
- 19:00: ride the red Midosuji Line south to Namba for your first evening on Dotonbori Canal: snap the Glico Running Man from Ebisubashi Bridge, visit mossy Hozenji Temple in Hozenji Yokocho and eat molten-hot takoyaki and table-griddled okonomiyaki.
Day 2: Kuromon Market, Doguyasuji, Shitenno-ji and Retro Shinsekai
- 09:30: arrive hungry at Kuromon Ichiba Market in Nipponbashi for a breakfast-lunch graze of grilled scallops, sea urchin, sashimi and wagyu skewers.
- 11:30: walk through the Sennichimae Doguyasuji kitchenware arcade to browse hand-forged Sakai chef's knives, then explore the retro boutiques and record shops of Amerikamura and Shinsaibashi-suji.
- 14:30: ride south to Shitenno-ji Temple to see Japan's oldest Buddhist temple layout and five-storey pagoda, or take the vintage Hankai streetcar to the arched red bridge of Sumiyoshi Taisha.
- 17:30: walk through Tennoji Park into neon-lit Shinsekai beneath Tsutenkaku Tower for a dinner of crispy kushikatsu skewers and cold beer in Janjan Yokocho alley, followed by night views from Abeno Harukas 300.
Day 3: Morning in Nara + Kaiyukan Aquarium (or Universal Studios Japan)
- Option A (Culture & Bay): at 08:30 board the Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba (40 minutes) to Nara. Walk through Nara Park with its 1,200 bowing wild deer to the colossal wooden hall of Todai-ji (housing the 15-metre bronze Great Buddha) and the thousands of stone and bronze lanterns of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Return to Osaka after lunch and take the green Chuo Line to Osakako Station for an afternoon at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, ending with evening bar-hopping in Ura-Namba or Tenma.
- Option B (Full Day at Universal Studios Japan): take the early JR Yumesaki Line train to Universal City Station, arriving 45 to 60 minutes before official park opening to head straight into Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
