Best Time to Visit Osaka

Cherry blossoms in Castle Park, crisp November foliage, summer river fireworks and winter lights.

Facing the sheltered waters of Osaka Bay, Osaka has hot, humid summers, mild dry winters that rarely see snow, and two long, comfortable shoulder seasons. For clear skies and comfortable walking temperatures, aim for late March to May or mid-October to late November.

Spring (late March to May) is the most sought-after season. Around the last week of March and the first week of April, over 3,000 cherry trees (sakura) burst into pale pink bloom across Osaka Castle Park and Kema Sakuranomiya Park along the Okawa River. A week after the main Somei Yoshino blossoms peak, the Osaka Mint Bureau (Zoheikyoku) opens its riverside promenade for just seven days in mid-April so visitors can walk beneath more than 130 rare, late-blooming double-petalled cherry varieties. Avoid the nationwide Golden Week holiday cluster (29 April to 5 May) if you dislike packed trains and theme-park queues.

Summer (June to August) starts with the humid June rainy season (tsuyu) and turns very hot in July and August, when daytime temperatures regularly top 33°C. What makes July special is Tenjin Matsuri (24 and 25 July), one of Japan's three great festivals: over a hundred boats lit with bonfires process up the Okawa River on the evening of 25 July beneath a massive fireworks display. Summer evenings are best spent along Dotonbori Canal or inside air-conditioned underground malls.

Autumn (October to November) brings crisp, sunny days, comfortable humidity and fiery red maple leaves in Minoh Park (30 minutes north) and golden ginkgo trees lining the four-kilometre boulevard of Midosuji Avenue.

Winter (December to February) is cool, dry and uncrowded, with the Midosuji Illumination wrapping the central avenue in millions of LED lights through December and steaming pots of oden and hot sake filling Tenma's bars. Pack layers with our packing guide.
