Porto 3-Day Itinerary: Bridges, Cellars and the Atlantic

A downhill-smart three-day route covering historic Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia cellars and the coast or Douro.

This three-day route is designed around Porto's gravity: each morning starts on the upper plateau and works gradually downhill toward the Douro River, using the funicular, cable car or upper bridge deck to save your knees. Before you travel, book your morning slot at Livraria Lello and at least one guided Port cellar tasting in Gaia; see our before-you-go briefing.

Day 1: Upper Baixa Tiles, the Sé Cathedral, Barredo & Ribeira

  • 09:30: begin on pedestrian Rua de Santa Catarina at the blue-and-white tiled exterior of Capela das Almas, browse the fresh produce and cheese stalls of the restored Mercado do Bolhao, and walk down Avenida dos Aliados.
  • 11:00: step inside Sao Bento Station to examine its 20,000 historical azulejo tiles, then climb the short slope to the fortified Sé Cathedral for its panoramic terrace and blue-tiled Gothic cloisters.
  • 12:45: descend through the medieval stepped alleys of Barredo to the Douro waterfront at Cais da Ribeira and walk five minutes west to Rua das Flores for lunch.
  • 14:30: tour the neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa (including the gilded Arab Room) and the gold-leaf baroque interior of Igreja de Sao Francisco next door.
  • 17:30: stroll along Cais da Ribeira beneath the iron arch of the Dom Luis I Bridge, then ride the Funicular dos Guindais back up to Batalha for an evening cachorrinho or northern dinner.

Day 2: Livraria Lello, Clerigos, Palácio de Cristal & Gaia Port Cellars

  • 09:00: use a pre-booked first-entry voucher at Livraria Lello to see the crimson staircase at its quietest, photograph the giant exterior tile panel on Igreja do Carmo, and climb the 225 steps of the Torre dos Clerigos.
  • 11:30: walk fifteen minutes west through Cedofeita to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal for shaded river viewpoints looking toward the mouth of the Douro.
  • 13:00: lunch in the upper town (try bacalhau à Gomes de Sá or split a francesinha), then walk down to the river and cross the lower deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia.
  • 15:00: take a guided cellar tour and Ruby/Tawny tasting at a historic Port wine lodge (such as Graham's, Taylor's, Sandeman, Ramos Pinto or Ferreira).
  • Sunset: ride the Gaia Cable Car or climb to Jardim do Morro and Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar to watch sunset light up Porto's stacked roofs, then walk flat across the upper deck of the Dom Luis I Bridge back into central Porto.

Day 3: Choose Between Foz do Douro & Serralves OR a Douro Valley Train Trip

  • Option A (Atlantic Coast & Serralves in the city): ride wooden Tram Line 1 (or bus/walk along the river) west to Foz do Douro where Atlantic surf breaks over the Felgueiras Lighthouse, continue to Matosinhos for fresh fish grilled over street coals at lunch, and spend the afternoon at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and its park.
  • Option B (Scenic Douro Valley by train): catch an early regional train from Sao Bento or Campanha along the Linha do Douro to Pinhão for a river boat ride between terraced schist vineyards and a quinta lunch before returning to Porto or continuing south to Lisbon.
