Arrowtown Gold Rush Village, 1868 Chinese Settlement & Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir

Explore Queenstown's gold-rush and wine hinterland 20 minutes east of town: walk Arrowtown's 1862 Buckingham Street and the restored 1868 Chinese Settlement, pan for gold in the Arrow River, and taste Pinot Noir in the Gibbston Valley.

Twenty minutes north-east of central Queenstown (reached by car, e-bike along the Queenstown Trail, or Orbus Route 2 bus), the landscape opens into the sun-warmed basin of the Arrow River (Kā-rere-o-Kahu) and the schist gorge of the Kawarau River. Here two chapters of Otago history sit side by side: the remarkably preserved 1862 gold-rush settlement of Arrowtown and the high-altitude Pinot Noir vineyards of the Gibbston Valley.

1. Arrowtown (Founded 1862), Buckingham Street & the 1868 Chinese Settlement

  • Buckingham Street, Avenue of Sycamores & Gold Panning (arrowtown.com): Established in late 1862 after Māori shearer Jack Tuhawaiki and prospector William Fox discovered alluvial gold in the Arrow River, Arrowtown preserves over sixty 19th-century schist-stone and weatherboard buildings along Buckingham Street and its lane of miners' cottages shaded by oaks and sycamores planted in 1867. Visit the Lakes District Museum & Gallery (in the 1875 Bank of New Zealand building) and hire a steel pan to swirl gravel for gold flakes in the Arrow River.
  • The Arrowtown Chinese Settlement (1868 to 1920s, DOC Historic Reserve): At the western end of Buckingham Street beside Bush Creek stands a moving historic site. Invited by the Otago Provincial Council in 1866 to rework the Otago goldfields, hundreds of Chinese miners from Guangdong province built a village here from 1868. Open free 24 hours a day, the reserve lets you walk inside restored stacked-schist huts, including Ah Lum's Store (c. 1883), one of the few surviving 19th-century Chinese merchant stores in New Zealand.

2. Gibbston ("Valley of the Vines"): Pinot Noir at 45° South

  • Why Central Otago Excels at Pinot Noir (centralotagowine.co): Continuing fifteen minutes east of Arrowtown past the 1880 Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge brings you into the Gibbston Valley. Planted between 320 and 420 metres above sea level on free-draining glacial schist gravels, Gibbston is the highest sub-region of Central Otago (at 45° South, the world's southernmost wine region), where warm summer days and crisp nights produce red-cherry, wild-thyme, and spice-scented Pinot Noir (75% to 80% of all plantings) alongside Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Chardonnay.
  • Five Cellar Doors Along the Gibbston River Trail: Drive, hop on a wine bus, or cycle the off-road Gibbston River Trail above the Kawarau River between five standout estates:
    1. Gibbston Valley Winery: Home to the region's oldest commercial vines (planted by Alan Brady in 1987), a cheesery, and New Zealand's largest underground Wine Cave, blasted 50 metres into the schist mountain in 1995.
    2. Chard Farm: Reached via a dramatic cliffside gravel lane high above the Kawarau Gorge, renowned for single-vineyard Pinot Noir.
    3. Kinross: A cellar door and bistro pouring five boutique Central Otago labels (Valli, Wild Irishman, Hawkshead, High Garden, and Kinross).
    4. Peregrine Wines & Brennan Wines: Admire Peregrine's translucent roof sculpted like the wing of a native falcon (kārearea), then visit family-run Brennan nearby.
