Best Time to Visit Queenstown: NIWA Climate Normals, Autumn Gold in April & Ski Season
Month-by-month weather guide for Queenstown using official 1991-2020 NIWA/WMO climate normals: compare long 22°C summer evenings in January and February, golden autumn foliage in April, and winter skiing from June to September.
Unlike New Zealand's humid subtropical north or the rainforest-drenched West Coast, Queenstown (310m elevation at 45° South) lies in a rain-shadow alpine basin east of the Southern Alps divide. According to official 1991 to 2020 NIWA and WMO climate normals, Queenstown receives only around 750 mm of precipitation a year across 6 to 8 rain days per month, giving the basin four sharply defined alpine seasons.

1. December to February (Summer) & March to May (Golden Autumn)
- Summer (December, January & February, Highs 20°C to 22°C, Lows 9°C to 10°C): Because of Queenstown's southern latitude, summer twilight lingers until 21:30 to 22:00, giving you fifteen hours of daylight to hike the exposed 1,748-metre ridge of Ben Lomond, walk the Routeburn Track, and cycle the Gibbston River Trail. February is statistically the driest month of the year (just 6 rain days).
- Autumn (March, April & May, Highs 12°C to 19°C, Lows 2°C to 8°C): For photographers, wine lovers, and walkers, April is Queenstown's single most atmospheric month. Calm, crystal-clear days turn the hillsides of Arrowtown and the shoreline of Queenstown Gardens into a blaze of gold, amber, and scarlet oak, willow, and sycamore leaves (celebrated during the late-April Arrowtown Autumn Festival), while Pinot Noir grapes are harvested across the Gibbston Valley.

2. June to September (Winter Ski Season) & October to November (Alpine Spring)
- Winter (June, July & August, Highs 8°C to 10°C, Lows -1°C to 0°C): From mid-June through September, snow blankets the high peaks while the town centre at 310 metres stays mostly snow-free with crisp overnight frosts. Skiers and snowboarders ride morning shuttles up to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona, and Treble Cone.
- Spring (September, October & November, Highs 13°C to 18°C): Spring brings uncrowded spring skiing in September, roaring snowmelt waterfalls in Milford Sound, and purple Russell lupins blooming along Otago riverbeds in late November (note that Wānaka's Roys Peak Track is closed annually from 1 October to 10 November for lambing).
