Sumela Monastery (Virgin Mary Monastery) in Altındere National Park: Complete Guide
Everything you need to know for visiting the 386 AD cliff-hanging Sumela Monastery in Altındere Valley.
Located forty-seven kilometres south of Trabzon in the deep, roaring spruce gorge of Altındere Valley National Park (in the Maçka district), the Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Sumela (Sümela Manastırı) is one of the most extraordinary architectural sights in the world. According to tradition, two Athenian monks named Barnabas and Sophronios founded the monastery in 386 AD (during the reign of Emperor Theodosius I) after discovering a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary painted by St Luke the Evangelist inside a dark mountain cave 300 metres up the sheer vertical rock face of Mount Mela (from the Pontic Greek sou Melá, "on the Black Mountain"). Patronised by the Byzantine emperors of Trebizond, after Alexios III Grand Komnenos was crowned here in 1349 and funded its massive expansion, and protected by imperial decrees (fermanlar) and gifts from Ottoman Sultans Selim I and Bayezid II, the complex reopened completely after a landmark seven-year rock-stabilisation and fresco restoration.
How the Arrival and Park Shuttle System Works (Crucial Practical Info)
To prevent traffic jams on the narrow one-lane cliff road inside the gorge, private cars and tour buses are no longer allowed to drive up to the monastery trailhead. Instead, all vehicles park at the designated Altındere Valley Car Park & Ticket Center on the valley floor:
- Step 1 (The 10-Minute Park Ring Minibus): buy your small round-trip shuttle ticket at the car park kiosk and hop onto the official municipal ring minibus, which departs every 5 to 10 minutes and winds up the forest road to the upper drop-off point at Aya Varvara Chapel.
- Step 2 (The 10-Minute Forest Footpath & 100 Stone Steps): from the shuttle drop-off, walk 300 metres along a shaded, gently sloping wooden forest boardwalk (pausing at the wooden terrace opposite the cliff for the classic full-facade photo of the monastery) to the monumental stone aqueduct and narrow entrance stairs. (Museum Pass Turkey is valid at the monastery turnstile).
What to See Inside Sumela
At the heart of the five-storey cliff complex (which includes 72 monk cells, guest quarters, a library and a sacred spring pool, ayazma, where holy water still drips from the cave ceiling) stands the Rock Church (Kaya Kilisesi). Built directly inside the natural cavern and covered both inside and on its outer courtyard wall with three layers of vivid 14th- to 18th-century frescoes, look up at the rock ceiling for Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin Mary (Panagia Gorgoepikoos) and lively biblical scenes from Genesis and the life of Christ.
