Where to Stay in Trabzon: Meydan Centre, Yomra Seafront and Mountain Chalets

Choosing between a walkable city-centre base around Meydan, modern sea-view resorts in Yomra or forest chalets.

Because Trabzon Airport sits right between the historic city centre (10 minutes west) and the modern coastal resort belt of Yomra (10 minutes east), while the mountain valleys of Maçka and Uzungöl lie 45 to 90 minutes inland, picking the right base depends on whether you want walkable city evenings, spacious sea-view hotel rooms, or misty pine-forest silence.

1. Meydan Parkı, Uzun Sokak & Ortahisar (Best All-Round Base for First-Timers Without a Car)

Stretching around Meydan Parkı (Atatürk Alanı), pedestrianised Uzun Sokak and the historic citadel of Ortahisar. Staying right in the centre is by far the most convenient choice if you are relying on public transport or day tours: you can walk in five minutes to Kemeraltı Bazaar, the Kostaki Mansion Museum, historic pide and kuymak restaurants, and the minibus ranks for Sumela Monastery, Uzungöl, Hagia Sophia and Boztepe. Look for historic boutique properties around Meydan (such as Zorlu Grand or restored stone townhouses in Ortahisar) or modern mid-range city hotels overlooking the port.

2. Yomra, Kaşüstü and Yalıncak (Best for 5-Star International Chain Hotels, Families & Rental Cars)

Located 7 to 12 kilometres east of Trabzon Airport along the coastal highway toward Rize and Uzungöl. Over the past decade, Yomra and Kaşüstü became Trabzon's modern hotel and shopping district (anchored by Cevahir Outlet and international properties like Novotel, Radisson Blu and Ramada Plaza). If you have a rental car, want larger family rooms, swimming pools, private pebble beaches and instant congestion-free access to the eastern highway for Uzungöl and Ayder trips, sleep here.

3. Maçka and Altındere Valley (Best for Quiet Spruce Forests Near Sumela Monastery)

Thirty-five minutes south of Trabzon along the rushing Değirmendere stream. Stay in a riverside wooden bungalow or mountain boutique hotel in Maçka or Coşandere if you want to wake up to the sound of mountain water and be the very first visitor through the gates of Sumela Monastery early in the morning.

4. Uzungöl, Hıdırnebi or Foleya / Tonya (Best for 1 Night in the High Alpine Clouds)

On a 4-day trip, spend 2 nights in Trabzon city and 1 night up in the mountains, either in a hillside wooden chalet overlooking Uzungöl Lake or on the 1,600-metre cloud-top plateau of Hıdırnebi / Erikbeli.
