Windhoek 3-Day Itinerary: Landmarks, Katutura and Bush Walks
Three days combining Windhoek's historic hill ridge, Katutura's kapana grills, Daan Viljoen wildlife and 4x4 prep.
Whether you spend two nights at the start of a Namibian self-drive safari and one night at the end, or base yourself in the capital for three consecutive days, this route covers Windhoek's historic ridge, its township markets and its surrounding wildlife hills without rushing. Arrange your MTC SIM card and currency on arrival; see our before-you-go briefing.
Day 1: Historic Ridge, Meteorite Fountain & Namibia Craft Centre
- Morning: begin on the hilltop traffic island at Christuskirche to photograph its 1910 sandstone Art Nouveau spire, then step across to the Independence Memorial Museum to ride the glass lift up through Namibia's history exhibits to the fourth-floor viewing balcony.
- Late Morning: stroll through the shaded olive and aloe terraces of Parliament Gardens in front of the 1913 Tintenpalast, then walk downhill to Zoo Park on Independence Avenue.
- Midday: examine the thirty-one iron-nickel space rocks of the Gibeon Meteorite Fountain on pedestrian Post Street Mall, then walk to the Old Breweries complex on Tal Street for lunch at the Namibia Craft Centre café and fair-trade shopping for northern woven baskets and San beadwork.
- Evening: ride up to a terrace on Luxury Hill or Klein Windhoek for a sunset Rock Shandy looking out over the Auas Mountains.
Day 2: Katutura, Oshetu Market Kapana, Penduka & Joe's Beerhouse
- Morning: join a local community guide for a tour of north-western Windhoek, pausing at the historic Old Location cemetery before heading into Katutura.
- Midday: gather around the smoky charcoal grills at Oshetu Community Market (Single Quarters) to eat sizzling strips of kapana beef dipped in chilli spice and tomato-onion salsa with warm vetkoek bread.
- Afternoon: drive ten minutes to the shore of Goreangab Dam to visit the Penduka Women's Cooperative and watch artisans create batik fabrics, then stop at the 1912 Windhoek Railway Station and the National Art Gallery of Namibia.
- Evening: book a table under the thatched roofs and log fires of Joe's Beerhouse in Eros to taste grilled oryx and kudu steaks paired with cold draught Windhoek or Tafel Lager.
Day 3: Daan Viljoen Walking Safari & 4x4 Provisioning
- Morning: drive twenty-five kilometres west along the C28 into the Khomas Hochland hills to Daan Viljoen Game Park. Because the reserve has no big cats or elephants, hike the 3-kilometre Wag-'n-Bietjie or 9-kilometre Rooibos trail on foot alongside giraffe, kudu, blue wildebeest and Hartmann's mountain zebra, followed by brunch overlooking Augeigas Dam.
- Afternoon: complete your 4x4 vehicle handover (checking both spare tyres, the jack and the rooftop tent), stock up on drinking water, firewood and fresh beef biltong at a local Slaghuis and supermarket, and take a late-afternoon walk around Avis Dam before driving out to Sossusvlei or Hosea Kutako Airport.
