Where to Stay in Windhoek: Klein Windhoek vs City Centre
Choosing between hillside boutique guesthouses in Klein Windhoek and Luxury Hill versus central hotels.
Unlike European capitals where staying in the dead centre is always the rule, Windhoek's most sought-after places to stay sit in the leafy residential hills and valleys one to three kilometres east of Independence Avenue. Separated from the central business district by the low ridge of Luxury Hill, these green suburbs combine secure off-street parking for 4x4s with garden swimming pools, sunset decks and immediate access to the city's best restaurants.
Klein Windhoek and Ludwigsdorf (best all-round base for first-timers)
Stretching east of the museum ridge along Sam Nujoma Drive and Nelson Mandela Avenue toward the Avis Dam hills, Klein Windhoek and adjoining Ludwigsdorf are Windhoek's most popular neighbourhoods for visitors. Shaded by jacaranda, acacia and bougainvillea trees, the area is packed with family-run boutique guesthouses, converted stone villas and contemporary design hotels. You are on the right (eastern) side of town for a fast, traffic-free transfer to and from Hosea Kutako International Airport along the B6, you have secure courtyard parking for a rooftop-tent 4x4, and you can walk or take a three-minute LEFA ride to popular garden bistros, wine bars and farm-stall cafés.
Luxury Hill (Kololo / Heinitzburg ridge: best for panoramic sunset views)
Rising directly between the central business district and Klein Windhoek, Luxury Hill lives up to its name with elevated views westward over the city bowl and southward toward the Auas Mountains. Crowning the ridge are three turn-of-the-century stone castles built by architect Wilhelm Sander (including the 1914 Heinitzburg Castle, now an upscale hotel with a famous sunset terrace), alongside quiet hillside guesthouses within a five-minute drive of Christuskirche and the Independence Memorial Museum.
Eros (best for Joe's Beerhouse and northern departures toward Etosha)
Immediately north of Klein Windhoek in a sheltered valley lies Eros, home to Joe's Beerhouse, relaxed safari lodges and garden bed-and-breakfasts. Staying in Eros makes evening dinner at Joe's a two-minute hop and gives you quick morning access onto the B1 highway heading north toward Okahandja, Waterberg and Etosha National Park.
Central Business District (Independence Avenue) and Surrounding Game Lodges
If you are travelling without a car and want to walk straight out of your lobby to Post Street Mall, museums and banks, several modern high-rise business hotels sit right on Independence Avenue and Freedom Plaza. Conversely, if you prefer waking up in the bush on your first or last night, private wildlife reserves and Daan Viljoen Game Park lodges sit twenty to thirty minutes outside the city. Fit your stay into our three-day Windhoek itinerary.
