Daan Viljoen Game Park and Outfitting Your Namibia 4x4

Hiking on foot among giraffe and zebra at Daan Viljoen Game Park, plus a checklist for 4x4 safari handovers.

Windhoek sits right on the threshold of the bush. Within twenty-five minutes of leaving Independence Avenue, you can be hiking on foot alongside giraffe and mountain zebra in the Khomas Hochland hills, or testing your dual-battery fridge and rooftop tent before setting off on a two-week loop of Namibia.

Walking with Wildlife at Daan Viljoen Game Park (25 km west)

Follow the paved C28 highway twenty-five kilometres west of central Windhoek into the rolling hills of the Khomas Hochland and you arrive at the gates of Daan Viljoen Game Park. Centred around the reed-fringed Augeigas Dam, this four-thousand-hectare sanctuary is home to blue wildebeest, kudu, gemsbok (oryx), springbok, eland, red hartebeest, giraffe and troops of Chacma baboons, as well as the near-endemic Hartmann's mountain zebra and more than two hundred species of birds (including crimson-breasted shrikes, Monteiro's hornbills and rosy-faced lovebirds).

What makes Daan Viljoen special is that it has no lions, elephants or rhinos, meaning you are allowed to leave your vehicle and explore on foot along two self-guided walking trails: the easy 3-kilometre Wag-'n-Bietjie Trail circling the dam valley and the scenic 9-kilometre Rooibos Trail climbing the surrounding ridges for wide views back toward the Windhoek basin. A circular 6-kilometre 4x4 game drive track also loops through the western hills, making it the perfect gentle test run for a newly collected rental vehicle before you tackle remote desert passes. Closer to Klein Windhoek on the eastern edge of town, Avis Dam Nature Reserve offers an even closer forty-minute sunset walking loop with dogs, runners and waterbirds.

Checklist for Your Windhoek 4x4 Handover and Supermarket Run

Because distances between fuel stations and mechanics in rural Namibia can exceed 250 kilometres of corrugated gravel road, spend two unhurried hours at your Windhoek 4x4 depot and a major shopping centre (such as Maerua Mall or The Grove Mall) before leaving the capital:

  • Two spare tyres and the tyre-pressure gauge: confirm your Hilux or Land Cruiser carries two full-size inflated spare wheels, a working bottle jack, a wooden base plate for sand, a 12-volt air compressor and a pressure gauge. Ask the technician to show you exactly how to lower the underneath spare wheel with the crank rod and how to unfold and zip the rooftop tent.
  • Water, biltong and firewood: buy two 5-litre or 25-litre Jerry cans of drinking water per person, bags of hardwood braai logs, firelighters and vacuum-sealed kudu or beef biltong, and download offline maps of Namibia while still on hotel Wi-Fi.
