Best Time to Visit Windhoek

Three hundred sunny days a year: crisp dry winter skies from May to October and green summer storms.

Averaging more than 300 days of sunshine a year at 1,655 metres above sea level, Windhoek has a semi-arid highland climate with low humidity and dramatic daily temperature swings. Because almost every visitor pairs the capital with a road trip to Etosha, Sossusvlei and the Atlantic coast, the best time to visit Windhoek aligns closely with the dry austral winter from May to October, with April to May and September to October offering the most comfortable temperatures.

Autumn Shoulder (April and May) is a superb time to arrive in Windhoek. The brief summer rains have just finished, leaving the Khomas Hochland hills around Daan Viljoen Game Park covered in golden-green grass and wild flowers. Daytime temperatures sit around a delightful 24°C to 26°C, dust is minimal on Namibia's gravel roads, and nights are cool without being freezing.

Dry Highland Winter (June, July and August) brings cloudless cobalt-blue skies and virtually zero rainfall across Windhoek and the Namibian interior. Afternoon highs reach a pleasant 20°C to 23°C for walking around Christuskirche and Post Street Mall. However, do not underestimate the combination of desert air and 1,655-metre altitude after sunset: night-time temperatures in Windhoek routinely drop to 6°C or 7°C (and occasionally touch frost in the surrounding valleys). In wider Namibia, winter is peak wildlife season as dry bush forces animals to congregate around waterholes in Etosha. Late October also brings the lively Windhoek Oktoberfest, celebrating the city's long brewing heritage with brass bands and seasonal festival biers.

Warm Dry Spring (September and October) sees daytime highs climb to between 28°C and 30°C under dry skies. This is peak game-viewing season across northern Namibia, so book both your Windhoek guesthouse and your 4x4 vehicle months ahead.

Summer Green Season (November to March) brings hot mornings (30°C to 31°C) and dramatic late-afternoon convective thunderstorms between January and March that turn the desert escarpments emerald green and attract migratory birdlife to Avis Dam and Goreangab.
