What to Wear in Windhoek
Peelable highland layers for sunny days and crisp 6°C winter nights, plus practical safari footwear.
Packing for Windhoek is straightforward because the city is relaxed, practical and deeply outdoors-oriented. In hotel dining rooms, craft markets and open-air steakhouses like Joe's Beerhouse, half the guests have just arrived from the airport and the other half have just driven in from the desert, so neat casual and safari clothing fits right in everywhere.
Highland temperature swings and footwear
- The onion-layer system for 15-degree daily swings: at 1,655 metres in dry semi-desert air, Windhoek warms up fast after sunrise and cools down just as fast at dusk. Between May and September, you will start your morning walk or 4x4 rental handover in a warm fleece or light down puffer jacket at 8°C, strip down to a breathable cotton or linen shirt by midday at 22°C, and pull your fleece and a beanie hat back on for an outdoor braai dinner in the evening.
- Broken-in walking trainers or desert ankle boots: paved streets around Christuskirche and Independence Avenue require only comfortable trainers, while lightweight suede desert boots (such as traditional southern African vellies / veldskoene, which you can buy locally in Windhoek leather shops) are ideal for hiking the rocky trails of Daan Viljoen Game Park and climbing dunes later in your trip.
- Summer heat and brief rain layers (November to March): in the austral summer, pack airy linen trousers, shorts, breathable UPF-rated sun shirts and a light packable rain shell for late-afternoon summer cloudbursts.
Sun protection, dry air and soft duffel bags
Highland UV radiation in Windhoek is fierce even on cool winter days, and humidity often drops below 20%. Pack a wide-brimmed hat with a chin cord, polarised sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, a rich moisturiser and lip balm. Finally, if any leg of your wider Namibia itinerary involves a light-aircraft flight from Eros Airport, pack your clothes in soft-sided duffel bags rather than rigid hard-shell suitcases so they fit into small cargo pods. Check seasonal weather before you go.
